It also automatically lowered the charge to 80% no rest stop needed, so we watched a couple episodes of Love, Death & Robots on Netflix. $2.16 for 89 miles of range in 19 minutes. My Houston EZ Tag works on the toll roads in Kansas, which is quite nice. We met up with my cousin Erin and her family for brunch. Afterward I let her husband Aaron drive my 3, I foresee them getting one in the future. $9.35 for 223 miles in 1:29 (forgot to take after photo until after we resumed our trip, so miles is really higher and charge time was shorter) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

When we were up over the summer this Supercharger site was under construction so we stopped at the older location with only 4 chargers. The car planned for a longer stop here to charge enough to make it to my brother’s place but we aren’t hungry yet so we did a rest stop instead and will add a charging stop in La Crosse, WI and have lunch there instead. $8.12 for 126 miles of range in 22 minutes. The 22 minutes is how long it took us to walk from the back lot to the travel center (with 4 restaurants), visit the restroom, grab some drinks and snacks, and walk back to the car. +SpiceWare Posted December 24, 2019 Author Share Posted December 24, 2019 Drive east across Minnesota was into the wind causing us to use a bit more energy than expected, so we slowed down and followed a semi truck for a bit to conserve energy. Charging in La Crosse. This Supercharger site must be an older V2 one as the car reported it as having the 120 kW rate, of which we maxed out at 117kW. Tesla did a software update back in April that increased the charge rate to most V2 sites to 150 kW $9.24 for 245 miles of range in 53 minutes. Nephew #1 just moved into a house down the street from my brother. He has a welder outlet in his garage, also known as a NEMA 6-50. It’s a 240v 50 amp outlet, so would be faster to charge than the NEMA 14-30 240v 30 amp dryer outlet that my brother installed in his garage for me. Afterward we stopped at Mid-State Technical College to opportunity charge while having lunch at Polito’s Pizza. On the way back we stopped at Wisconsin Dairy State Cheese Company in Rudolph for some ice cream, squeaky cheese, and dairy fudge. Free for 15 miles of range in 38 minutes. Checked the stats on the car before we hit the road and saw that our energy usage jumped to 301 Wh/mi. That would be due to all the short trips and the need to heat the cabin up from freezing. We stopped again at La Crosse and Albert Lea, and are staying the night at in West Des Moines. We’re all quite tired and fighting a bug, so documentation for this part of the trip will not be as in depth. I looked up the following charging info in my Tesla account. La Crosse was $4.80 for a 20 minute charge. We stayed in the car. Albert Lea was $17.64 for 63 kWh while we ate lunch. Laws in Minnesota let Tesla charge for the actual amount of energy delivered, which is how it should be - could you imagine going to a gas station to buy “5 minutes of gas” only to get stuck at a slow pump? The hotel’s fairly new. They have 3 Tesla chargers and a J1772 mounted on 2 poles. When I plugged in I was only getting 10 miles per hour using one of the 2 Tesla chargers on the left pole, which meant 20+ hours to a full charge. When we got back from dinner I plugged into the 3rd Tesla charger, on the back side of the right pole, and am now getting 33 miles per hour. Bethany: $1.68 during a 7 minute rest stop Olathe: $7.56 during a 38 minute meal break Wichita: $6.93 during a 38 minute light meal break We stayed the night once again at the Home 2 Suites in Midwest City, OK. Denton: $4.62 during a 21 minute stop while we walked over to a nearby store to pick up some cold medicine for mom. Coriscana: $0.00 during our lunch stop. +SpiceWare Posted January 10, 2020 Author Share Posted January 10, 2020 One thing this trip did for me is to make me appreciate early EV adopters who don't have home charging. The cabin we stayed at only had a standard 120V outlet available outside, which is not enough to charge the car when its cold outside. Normally the car uses 1mph when parked and not plugged in, to run the sentry mode and such, but due to the cold it was using about 3mph. So overnight we'd lose ~30 miles of range. Because of this I'd have to plug in my car whenever we were at my brother's place. When I'd first plug in it would start out at 9mph, and take about an hour before the battery warmed up enough to take the full 22mph rate with a dryer outlet. The NEMA 6-50 was out of stock, but just checked and they're back so I've ordered one for next time. It'll will let me plug in at my nephew's to charge at 30mph in his climate controlled garage. While we had a lot of fun, our New Years ended up being a bust - both mom & I caught a bad bug that was going around, we ended up staying at the cabin and going to bed early. We're both still fighting it, made for a long drive back, and we've been on antibiotics since getting in to see our doctor at the start of the week. My nephew even caught it and had to deal with it on his drive back to the Army base in Kansas.
