Genesis/MD
Sonic 3D Blast: Director's Cut - 106

This was a very enjoyable experience! I've changed my opinion about Sonic 3D Blast in general because of this ROM hack. You should definitely try this ROM hack even if you don't particularly care for regular Sonic 3D Blast. If nothing else, the Genesis/MD version of Sonic 3D Blast has some extremely good music, and it's worth playing just for that alone.

TIMES TO ADD - MSX:

Alpha Roid - 10 minutes

Burgertime - 5 minutes

Squish 'Em - 5 minutes

Star Soldier - 10 minutes

While I wait for the finals on 2600 NEW HSC Season 10 Paper Medal Tournament, I had much more fun with MSX games, learning their mechanics and testing my skills.

EVIDENCES OF THE WEEK:

1) My gameplay footages - Keystone Kapers and River Raid for MSX on Blue MSX Emulator

2) My 2600 Squish 'Em new score on 7800 console - 245,370 points (Game 1, Difficulty B/B)

Here are my times for the past week (November 30th through December 6th)...

Arcade:

Mario Bros. - 160 min. in 7 sessions

Like last week, Mario Bros. was the only game I played this week. Though this isn't as popular as its successor, Super Mario Bros., the game does have its significance in gaming history... it's the first time Mario could collect coins yielding a "Pu-ling" sound. This sound somehow transcended the original game it appeared in, it's also heard in Super Mario Bros., Flappy Bird and even a commercial for photo books which I saw on TV this week. I wonder if the producers of this commercial ever played Mario Bros...

Another one of those streams where played several games for one life a piece.  I call them "Until I Die" streams, because I only play until I die.  (And more Bonk's Adventure...  two runs through the game, and a new personal best time of 46min 50sec.)

TurboGrafx-16

Bonk's Adventure - 150 min (A couple runs through the game.)

Falcon - 14 min

Fantasy Zone - 1 min (I'm terrible at Fantasy Zone.)

Final Lap Twin - 3 min

Galaga 90 - 8 min (Got farther than I thought I would.  Haven't played this in a while.)

Ghost Manor - 12 min (I really wish this would wouldn't have lasted this long.  This game is terrible.)

Gradius - 9 min (Lasted longer than I thought I would on this one, too.  Especially for it being 1 life.)

Gunboat - 15 min (Oh man, I had no idea what I was doing on this one.  Unfortunately, the first level is un-fail-able... so I eventually just turned it off.  Bleh.  Prob won't play again.)

Impossamole - 2 min (No idea what I was doing in this one.)

JJ & Jeff - 4 min (I have this game, but I've never been good at it.)

Jack Niklaus' Turbo Golf - 8 min (On the golf games, I only play until I get my first bogie.  I've never made it past the first hole in these streams.)

Jackie Chan - 5 min

Keith Courage - 17 min

Klax - 8 min (I've never been good at Klax, either.  Guess it's no longer the 90s.)

Knight Rider - 4 min (Why can't I stop jumping?)

Kyuukyoko Tiger - 2 min (Want to play this one more.)

Legend of Hero Tonma - 2 min

Legendary Axe - 5 min (Was actually pretty mad at this death.  I'm better at this game than that, but the rules of the Until I Die streams are that when I die, I move on.)

Legendary Axe 2 - 4 min (I haven't really tried playing this since I rented it back in the 90s.)

Magical Chase - 19 min (Was on the easy difficulty.  lol)

Military Madness - 91 min (Got farther than I though I would.)

No highlight video yet.  Will probably put one together tomorrow.  Can post here if anyone wants to see it.

This week was a lot of fun gaming wise! It had been quite a while since I had done any retro gaming and the spousal unit hadn't played games hardly at all for just as long, so this week we spent a few evenings playing Sega Genesis and trading off the controller between levels. First we did a full play through of Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master (via the Mega SD) which neither of us had ever played before, and holy cow that game is just freakin' amazing! The last couple levels were reaaaaally tough, but we persevered and were able to finish it on our last continue. After that we checked out the original Shinobi for the Master System, which was pretty fun but wow are those mini game levels you have to beat to get ninja powers super difficult, then we played about halfway through The Revenge of Shinobi before calling it a night. Later in the week we did a full play through of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was just as fun as ever, and actually managed to get all the chaos emeralds before we had even finished Casino Night Zone; which I'm pretty sure was a first since we almost never get them all until Mystic Cave Zone.

As far as modern gaming goes, it was all Breath of the Wild for me this week! The second play through is turning out to be even more fun than the first, since I have a pretty good idea of where everything is and what to do now, and I'm putting a lot more focus on completing side quests and just taking my time exploring every nook and cranny of Hyrule this time around; and oh boy is there ever a lot to explore.

That's all the gaming news from around here for this week! Until next time, and as always, best wishes and happy gaming to you and yours.

Gameboy (* = Color)

Golf 73

Mario's Picross 214

Pokemon Gold* 62

Star Trek: 25th Anniversary Ed 390

A bit more time with some Gameboy games.  I replaced the battery in Mario's Picross so I could try to advance and unlock extra puzzles (but I haven't unlocked anything yet).  I also managed to destroy the Doomsday Machine and finish Star Trek.  I'll have to check with my brother, but I think we bought that cart for Christmas 27 years ago!

Only played a few games this week, but I feel that they were all good games.

Atari 2600

Demon Attack                   -20 Minutes          I always enjoy playing this game, I like that fact that the shooting mechanism starts out slow, then speeds up as the game progresses. I also played this on the Activision Anthology for the PS2, which I highly recommend for the game selection and soundtrack. For some reason with Atari 2600, more than any other system, I like to turn off the sound effects and turn up some of my personal music collection.

NES

Super Mario 3                    -20 Minutes        There's not much to be said that hasn't been said already about this game.  I remember standing in line at Toys R Us that wrapped around the store with my mom when I was a kid to purchase this great game. I think this is my favorite

Mario game, although I really enjoyed Super Mario World and Super Mario 64.

Dreamcast

San Francisco Rush 2049   -20 Minutes        I really enjoyed playing this game because it has a fun twist to it. When your car goes airborne, you can open up wings on the car to fly through the air for a brief period. I think that makes the game a little different than other driving games and I would definitely recommend it.

Is that golf game similar to the original blackbox golf for the NES? Also thats a cool side project for replacing the battery. Was it just unscrewing a couple screws and replacing a coin battery?

Yep, it is VERY similar to NES golf.  This one probably has fewer courses or something like that and of course it is not in color, but it is almost the same otherwise.  I might be overlooking something, but probably not.

Replacing a battery in a NES or GB game the correct way involves de-soldering the "legs" that the battery is physically attached to.  However, I didn't do this the "correct" way.  I just took a tiny flat screwdriver and wiggled and worked the battery until it popped off of its legs.  Then I took some black electrical tape and taped in a replacement.  It works easily because the Gameboy cartridge holds everything in place nice and tightly. . . Oh and you need a special security bit to unscrew the single screw in a GB cartridge.

Right now I am out of practice and only getting 20,000 to 40,000.  I used to average around 100,000.  My all time best is 928,982.

When I first started playing it , it took me about 2 or 3 days to get to 10,000.  Levels 7 and 8 felt like it took forever to complete, but with some practice

that feeling of will this round ever end went away.  :D

I first played Eggomania a couple of years ago in the High Score Club.  I had to use a keyboard and I came in dead last that week.  But I liked it, bought the cartridge and have played it a lot over the last 2-3 years.  It's a slower version of Kaboom but still challenging enough.  Next time it is played on the HSC, I expect to come in first.

Amidar I played for the first time this year on the HSC and liked it.  I now play it every 2-3 weeks.

Both of these games are not liked on Atari Age.  In the top 100 favorite games list elsewhere on this site, Amidar came in 159th place out of 220+ games.  Eggomania didn't receive a single vote.

Here's the summary for Week 49, running from November 30 - December 6. We logged 3909 minutes of eligible play, playing 82 games on a total of 14 systems.

Top 10:

1. Star Trek 25th Anniversary (Game Boy) - 390 min. (#1)
2. Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master (Genesis) - 302 min.
3. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis) - 275 min.
4. Buttsubushi (PlayStation) - 227 min. (#8)
5. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 221 min. (#4)
6. Mario's Picross (Game Boy) - 214 min.
7. Eggomania (Atari 2600) - 206 min.
8. Bases Loaded (NES/Famicom) - 188 min. (#2)
9. Mario Bros. (Arcade) - 160 min. (#9)
10. Hyper Final Match Tennis (PlayStation) - 156 min.

Pre-NES top 10:

1. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 221 min. (PN#1)
2. Eggomania (Atari 2600) - 206 min. (PN#6)
3. Mario Bros. (Arcade) - 160 min. (PN#3)
4. Pac-Man (Atari 2600) - 80 min.
5. Squish 'Em (Atari 2600) - 73 min.

10. 1942 (MSX) - 30 min.
10. Rally-X (MSX) - 30 min.

Top 10 systems:

2. Game Boy (677) (#1)
3. Atari 2600 (661) (#2)
4. PlayStation (383) (#3)
4. TG-16/PC Engine (383)
6. MSX (330)
7. NES/Famicom (208) (#5)
8. Arcade (185) (#8)
9. Atari 8-bit (68)
10. Game Boy Color (62) (#4)

While Star Trek 25th Anniversary on the Game Boy keeps its place as #1, Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master is only 88 minutes behind. The pre-NES list has a lot of usual suspects with Solar Fox and Eggomania in the top, but also a strong showing of MSX. Systems wise, the Genesis goes from not even being on the list last week to becoming the most played this week.

(Zanac Ex is a MSX2 game and thus listed as its own system)

No changes to the 1000, 5000 or 10000 minute clubs.

So, a question. If I was to play Action 52, do I count the many games on it as separate games or do they all go under Action 52? Yes, I am seriously going to try Action 52 since I got my Nt mini about an hour ago and I like to play terrible games like CrazyBus and stuff sometimes, as weird as that sounds.

Action 52 is listed as a single entry. Currently it has 3982 minutes so if you cram at least 1018 minutes out of it, it will exceed the 5000 minute limit.

Actually it was the 47th most played game as per the end of 2019 stats. (6th most played NES/Famicom game!!)

One thing for certain, this tracker is not representative of what most people would consider to be the top/most popular retro games. Or maybe the assumption of which titles are most popular is a myth based on which titles people best remember but not necessarily would play again.

Thats good to know about Golf for the Gameboy. Also very interesting that you used the black electrical tape, as for I have never been a fan of soldering myself. A long time ago, when I couldn't afford games, I bought a mod chip for my PS2, and my uncle helped solder the mod chip on the smallest pin you could imagine. Funny thing is, it still works today and plays burned games.

That is an amazing high score, well done. I just found that it is easier to use a mouse to play kaboom, rather than use the replica PS2 I have to play the game on the Stella Atari 2600 emulator.

I just played Eggomania and Amidar. Your right, Eggomania is like a slower version Kaboom but it is still very challenging to me. I think I liked Amidar better, and that seems like a really fun game. I am going to try to play that a little more during this next week.

Yeah, so I played Action 52 for 57 minutes last night, and it's... yeah. It's Action 52. I played all of the games on there and I don't think I want to put a whole lot more time into it, but I think some of the games are worth looking into a little bit more.

So.. um... what are the recommended games in Action 52? I think a few of them have some potential, although I forget their names at this point.

Yes, absolutely. Ask average people (which basically means people who do not post here!) to name console games from the 80s and you'll probably get "Mario", for example, but there are only 40 instances of the word "Mario" in this thread this year (although this post increases that count to 42), and not all of those are actually instances of time being tracked, as that includes discussions as well. Meanwhile, I try play more obscure things (SuperGrafx) and Japanese versions specifically instead of international versions.
