WAR OF THE ROBOTS!

waroftherobots.gifHere's a game that both frantic shoot'em-up fans and Vectrex players alike can sink their teeth into. In George Pelonis' War of the Robots, alien robots have waged war on Earth. You are an elite soldier - one of many stationed in Antarctica (aka "The Robot Drop Zone"). Poised atop your watchtower and armed with massive firepower, your job is obvious... obliterate any and all robots that enter your sector. War of the Robots is a first- person perspective shooter, taking place in a pseudo-3D environment. Game features include top-notch graphics & animation, tough enemy AI, goal-driven game play, RADAR display and an illustrated instruction manual. Get it at the Good Deal Games booth at Classic Gaming Expo 2003.

HOMEBREWS APLENTY!

skeleton+.jpgOld game consoles never die, thanks to homebrew efforts from today's most talented game designers. Packrat Video Games is well-known in the classic gaming community for their excellent selection of Atari, Intellivision, ColecoVision, Commodore, Odyssey, Sega, TI-99, and much more. At this year's event, Packrat will also be showcasing the Atari 2600 homebrew Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (not the same game as the Parker Bros. prototype version), which will be making their first public appearances at their booth. In addition they'll be offering at least EIGHT more homebrews, including Jammed, Skeleton+, Okie Dokie, Mental Kombat, Borgwars Asteroids, This Planet Sucks!, Venture II and Dark Mage. Haven't played a "new" Atari 2600 game in awhile? Problem solved. Packrat will also be running half-hour drawings for gift certificates, free games, and free t-shirts. Be sure to stop by and check out all of their goods.

VIDEO GAMING'S ICONS

keynotes.jpgOne of the many features that distinguishes Classic Gaming Expo from any other event is the gathering of video gaming legends, the people who shaped the electronic gaming industry we know today. We're fortunate enough to have many returning "alumni", and this year brings a record number of new faces to the Expo, including Karl Anderson, Garth Clowes, Brad Fregger, Jim Huether, Mark Lesser, Rick Levine, Bob Newstadt, Paul Norman, Mark Richards, Ed Rotberg and David Stifel. In addition, seasoned freelance pro Zach Meston has joined as a keynote panel moderator. Meet and greet the men and women who built the very foundation of video gaming at CGE. For more details on our guests, browse through the celebrities page.

THE CGE SWAP MEET

swapmeet.jpgThere are few moments in this day and age when you can barter to exchange Atari games for Intellivision games, a rare title for several uncommon ones, or work out a blockbuster deal where a shoebox full of ColecoVision cartridges is traded for a boxed Game Boy and some Nintendo Power magazines. Very few moments indeed, but at Classic Gaming Expo, the "Swap Meet" has become a time-honored tradition. At 5pm on Saturday, immediately following the day's scheduled events and exhibitor hours, the main floor closes and the keynote room is converted to the CGE Swap Meet. Everyone is encouraged to bring a box or satchel full of trade items, or have fun perusing gamers' gems. In past years there have been some blockbuster deals and amazing steals (an Atari 2600 Video Life, valued at well over $500 was sold for $10 at CGE2k1). Stick around and be part of a trading session unlke any other.

BLUE WIZARD IS ABOUT TO DIE!

bluewizard.jpgIf you've been to Classic Gaming Expo before, then you already know that we're always excited to try new things, especially if they're fun and gaming related. You've probably heard the title of this book blared at you from the speakers of an Atari Gauntlet coin-op. If you listen closely though, you'll hear it read also makes a compelling argument for seeing video games as works of art, portraying them as "movement drama" and comparing them to great symphonic works of music. You'll be able to purchase the book at CGE as well. We've read several passages from this ambitious effort and if you've ever had dreams about video games, you'll relate very well with its content.

NWCGE PRESENTS "LABYRINTH"

labyrinth.jpgNorthwest Classic Gaming Enthusiasts will be demoing several unusual titles and selling loads of games, but one of the highlights that we found particularly interesting is the release of a Starpath game that was never completed called Labyrinth, for the Atari 2600. You'll notice the similarity to the game Escape From the Mindmaster, but there are so many differences in this game that it seems the entire project was scrapped and started anew. Labyrinth requires a single load and has three levels, the first two of which are completely playable. The levels, sounds, and music are different from Escape From the Mindmaster. Also, the "active" hit counter from EFtMM is missing, so you can't actually die! You'll need to find the key to advance to new mazes. Labyrinth will be packaged in a special collector's DVD case and will sell for a mere $15!
