Anyone who bought the Switch Atari-collection?

Love that it's portable. If 3ds wasn't dead, I'd have liked to see a version on there, her the touch screen would make a decent paddle / trackball too.

They probably figured that having it on the DS was "good enough".

I like that the Switch version supports the Flip Grip on vertical games. It's nice that the Switch is so versatile, it can be a horizonal handheld, a vertical handheld, tabletop mode, console mode... Very much a "Jack of All Trades". Also, this collection does have an option for Online Multiplayer, but I haven't trued it yet. Can anyone tell me if the multiplayer experience is smooth? Also, is it even worth doing online multiplayer in Pong and Combat when I can just get Clubhouse games for the same MSRP which also has Tank Battle and Ping Pong minigames?

Edit: Some people were chatting about Battlezone, I think 'Atari' sold off that IP during one of their bankruptcies, so the other company would have to do like an Arcade Archives port if you want it on Switch. I kinda wish that 'Atari' would release a collection that includes some of the most iconic 2600 games that they don't own, like the Pac Man Games and Space Invaders and Pitfall and Kaboom and Dig Dug and Donkey Kong and ET, but that's more effort (and more licensing fees) than they're willing to spend, I guess (although AtGames usually puts some of those in their Flashback consoles, so maybe 'Atari' could actually get some of these old licenses and do a switch/ps4/xbox/vita port if they wanted to?)

I like the AtGames Flashback Classics compilation a lot more than the PC (and new Atari VCS) version in Atari Vault. I don't know why we have two separate versions of the compilation other than it is probably related to who has the license to do what, but the Vault just looks and feels very dated compared to Flashback Classics. I also find the Flashback versions to be slightly better in terms of gameplay and smoothness of video, and the Flashback has better (but still not great) online multiplayer UI and capability. I like the overall UI of the Flashback version much, much better.

The version on Switch is the DEFINITIVE version of Flashback Classics. Here's hoping that AtGames finally releases an all-in-one compilation for other consoles rather than split it up over three discs.

And I'd of liked a few more video options. While not a particular problem for me since I like the artwork, I still didn't like that turning off the arcade artwork stretches the games.

@Atariboy I don't have it in front of me, but I think you can set the bezel art to black so the screen isn't stretched. I know I haven't had that same problem, because I don't like playing with side art or a stretched screen view either.

A bit late here, but was bored browsing old posts and saw this old thread.

Since I couldn't actually play my Switch version of the collection back in 2020 due to not owning the hardware at that time, I never replied since I didn't want to just assume that it behaved identically to the PS4 and Vita versions that I was familiar with back then.

Now that I'm actually able to play the Switch version of this collection, I can confirm though that it behaves the same. With the arcade bezel art turned off, a subset of the arcade lineup is stretched to 16:9 proportions. Affected games include Gravitar, Lunar Lander, Major Havoc, Red Baron, and Tempest. A bit of a trend in all being vector games, but both Asteroids games, Black Widow, and Space Duel don't end up stretched when disabling artwork. All the raster games remain in their correct aspect ratio.

That reminds me, I gotta try this on the OLED screen! The vector games should be spectacular. Tempest 4000 is out now, too.

For those who haven't bought the Atari oldies collection yet, this page shows that it's gone on sale for $20 or less five different times. That seems like a better price to me than $40. https://www.dekudeals.com/items/atari-flashback-classics

Does anybody know if there is a way to not show the control summary overlay between games? It tends to obscure the score, making it rather unpleasant for score chases. e.g.

Mapping the fire button and the reset switch to the same button has caused me some real grief too.

The fire button can be remapped. I don't see what can be done about the overlay, though.

How so? It's not like it's visible during gameplay and it makes it easy to adjust the settings and see what the difficulty switches are set to. While there's unfortunately no way to temporarily hide it that I've found on the Switch collection, I certainly wouldn't call that a major issue.

That said, it's annoying for anyone playing on this collection that is participating in something like the high score contest here at AtariAge and wants to capture a nice screenshot of their score without it being partially obscured. But for the vast majority of time, it's a definite asset that this overlay is present whenever a 2600 game is idle.

Ah I didn't know it was only when idle. Then that wouldn't be annoying.

I'm still annoyed they didn't allow us to use gyroscopic controls for paddle turning.

I mean, I can turn a joycon in midair...

That would require Atari to put in a little more work on getting motion controls in. I think they are more in it for the quick buck.

It would make sense to do that. ?

Having owned the PS4 versions for a while, I found it a bit annoying to have to switch discs for different games.  It feels nice having all 150 games on one single card, meaning you don't have to go switching around.  Not to mention it shows the power of the Nintendo Switch game card, but I digress.

Being able to play at home or on the go is a nice touch as well.  The only downside is that the JoyCon doesn't exactly feel natural for some games.  Also, I agree about the paddles, as you have to use the touchscreen to truly enjoy them.  Although I did find that the directional pad worked well with Casino.

I enjoy the nice variety of games to play, and the addition of the M-Network games was nice too.  The inclusion of the manuals was a good idea as well, although I don't understand why the console manuals are included as well.  Oh well!

All in all, it's a great compilation I have to say.

It was in the video game bargain bin at Wally World for $25 so I picked it up last spring. Being able to play all sorts of rare 5200 and especially arcade titles I probably never would have otherwise was a lot of fun. They all work about as well as any other of these old game re-release dealios. The box says there's 150 games, which isn't a lie, but the game choices range from essential classics like Asteroids, Centipede, and Missile Command, to games that absolutely nobody asked to be rereleased on a modern system (Oh boy, Flag Capture and Video Chess! My favourites!). I guess with a 150 game compilation like this there's always gonna be some filler titles though. I got used to using the thumb stick for things like Breakout and Pong eventually, though obviously it'll never feel as natural as a proper analog paddle controller. It would be awesome if ANY game company came out with some kind of modern analog dial controller, but I guess it's just such a relic of its time and the applications are too limited for it to really be useful except for games specifically built around it.

Overall 150 retro games for $25 is a pretty solid buy, even if you probably won't ever touch a good few of them. Hopefully it didn't cost much more than that at release, though. I can't imagine spending much more than that on what's basically an emulator compilation.
