I checked the version installed on my phone, the sound is mostly correct, but missing the Qbert cursing sound. Looks like Qbert romset has a number of wav files to provide the sound, so if you are missing those, it might be the problem. The Mame on my phone is based on Mame 0.37b5- that older version works better on weaker hardware from what I understand. No idea what qbert rom set it is as they aren't versioned. But I think it also works properly on my PC with a much newer Mame. I think the key here is having all the wav files.
mr_me
What version are you having issues with? They introduced Votrax emulation in version 0.181. So if you like the voice emulation use latest Mame, if you don't then use version 0.180.

Mr_me is correct. MAME version 0.180 is definitely the version you want to utilize. Also, Gorf and Wizard of Wor were impacted too, so leverage 0.180 for those games as well. Very likely, someday, the end sounding results of voice emulation will improve significantly. Even games like Mario Bros. regarding discrete sound, after switching from samples to full-on chip emulation were sorted for the best in the end, albeit it took some time. +Yurkie
Thanks Gentlemen for the replies. I experimented with different versions and am now running .176 on my home pc with samples for Q*bert and it runs correctly without sound issues. I am running other classic games like Mr. Do, Dig Dug, Pepper II, Frogger, Pac-man....about 20 total on version .181 Q*bert is near and dear to my heart and at the end of the day the only game I felt compelled to get right. Now I'm just waiting on my rotating wall mount so I can mount my 50" TV and turn it 90 degrees and really play some serious Q*bert. I'm using the 8bitdo M30 2.4g USB for my controller. I always really loved joysticks, but find the gamepad to be the best. I am a huge fan of the the M30 2.4g and use it for my Genesis also.
