First Tables

Using Highest level reached on Gridrunner to break any tied positions so please post this everyone. Makes it worth something as you can get a lower score by getting further, this can be from any go, not just your highest score go. Yes it does put me ahead, I don't just make this up  Speaking of which...

UPDATED: Season 17 Current Standings Gotta watch out for McKong :pirate:

So I switched to my NTSC 800 and loaded the same ATR that trbb provided. First game plays perfectly fine, then it freezes! What is going on, is it my Starplex joystick that sends a combined input signal that causes the game to lock up? Is it the SIO2SD that somehow sets some values wrong upon loading? I'll see if switching to a traditional joystick makes a difference.

Edit: Not entirely sure, but I played multiple games without issues with an alternative joystick. Then I took a chance and switched back, and on the second game it froze. Hm, I wonder if I'm having crosstalk on some wires, though pretty much I have never observed it before.

LA Swat - 6001 pts (reached level 2 but didn't realize hostages must not be shot...)

That is really odd behaviour. I have tried several .atr's and have not had an issue (other than my crap gameplay)

LA SWAT 71,550 level 5. I'm back on the first of three joysticks who is firing again as holding up is not good for them!

Bob, I can probably find you an OK CX-40 if you are desperate. I would just need to work out a way to post it without leaving my house

I noticed if you push all directions at the same time and press fire, the player sprite disappears. Of course a regular joystick is not capable of this but the five button Starplex is not a regular joystick. Not that it per se crashes the game, but I should probably do some testing and measuring. I assume Altirra can be setup with keyboard based joystick emulation so it would be possible to simulate combinations of left+right, up+down, with or without fire to see if that really is what causes the game to lock up.

Edit: Nope, Altirra does not support contradicting joystick movement. If you push up + down it reads out as no direction at all, same about left + right. Of course true diagonals work fine, but for this purpose it is not suitable to test the behavior. Perhaps some other A8 emulator can do this.

Edit 2: Ok, Atari800win does the same so perhaps this is a limitation of BASIC STICK(0) command, not the emulator. I need to find another joystick testing program to be sure.

Edit 3: PEEK(632) yields the same values as STICK(0) but perhaps some games read the joystick from raw hardware rather than what the OS has parsed for them.

Edit 4: Never trust emulation. Real Atari 800 reads all directions at the same time as I had expected from the start. Since some combinations of two keys work in emulation but some don't (and it applies both to Altirra and Atari800win) it couldn't really be a Windows issue, but rather on purpose programming of respective emulator? Anyway it would require a disassembly of LA Swat to identify how it handles joystick input and if any unexpected combination of inputs would cause it to freeze.

Some couriers do a collection service. Parcel2go is a good site https://www.parcel2go.com/

@mimo that's kind of you but I'm ok thanks, I try and preserve certain sticks for some games, the holding up ones are the killers - probably I should swap sticks between the two games as I need the Quickshot's movement for Gridrunner and probably a comp pro or stiffer stick for SWAT

@McKong has updated his games suggestion list - other's welcome to do this. I think one more regularish round then we can do a tourney / theme round for on round 10

@carlsson, a game might be programmed to read the values 0 to 15 and then branch off based on the inputs using a table of addressed so it may have 0's or dummy invalid addresses in for the illegal values - that might be the reason it crashes.

@everyone "May the Power of the Grid be with you" :-D

No worries.
I've just re-belted my 410, just waiting for a PSU now :D
