Apple //e green phosphor monitor

Hello all,

I am recapping the Apple //e green phosphor monitor and I stumbled into a 16uF/25V bipolar electrolytic capacitor which doesn't seem to be available - not even from large suppliers such as RS. I believe this cap is the last connected to the H-Deflection line. Ideally I'd like to replace it as I found a few caps completely off, a couple leaking and all of them were on the edge of their capacitance.

I can easily find 10 or 22 uF.

I am not competent enough to pick a different value unfortunately - any ideas?

Thanks!

A couple of options here:  1) Place two electrolytic capacitors back to back.  That's what they actually do internally for bipolar caps anyway.  2) Get a film capacitor.  They're a bit more pricey, but are not polarized, available in 16uF, and have even better voltage tolerance than the cap you're replacing.  They're typically made for UPS applications.

I went for the 15uF in the end - it was also a compatible size and of radial type. The monitor is up and running, working great.

To be honest geometry looks ok but I did see all the adjustment pots on the board.

Cheers for your help!

Very nice. That looks crisp and fresh.

Try Atarisoft Galaxian. :D

FWIW, I would have gone for a higher rating on the cap. 1uF in the spec, you can likely get away with a 22uF cap. Under-rated, hard to say, but 1uF difference with a 15% var rating is potentially giving you close to 16uF anyway.
