Season 17 Round 12 - Wrecking Crew

After some consideration I've modified the remaining season titles list.  Wrecking Crew and Donkey Kong 3 will be the last two rounds.  I've decided to remove Excitebike because the only fair competition would be to only play the challenge tracks and I think it'll be tedious to have to continually reset the console to race each track.  At this point in the season I don't think that's too big of a deal.  The bonus games will be open for four more weeks if anyone else wants to jump in.

Bonus Games
These are optional games where you can earn up to 25 extra season points per game.  To claim a bonus, post your final score in the current game thread anytime during the season.  Feel free to post multiple times if your score improves as the season goes on.  +5 season points will be awarded, up to 25, for every run/goal you score over the CPU.  For example, if the final score is Player 3 and CPU 1 then points earned are calculated as (3 - 1) x 5 = 10.  An additional 5 points per game will be awarded to the player who submits the highest score differential.  The bonus for Golf will be +5 season points, up to 25, for each stroke under par and an additional 5 for the best score.

General HSC Season Rules:

  • To participate, just post a score to the thread. Anyone can join in at any time.
  • A picture or screenshot is encouraged when posting a score but not required.
  • The season is 14 rounds long.
  • Games will be posted on Sundays and run two weeks through Sunday at 11:59 PM CST.
  • Do not exploit game glitches, take advantage of 1-up loops or intentionally die in order to replay a level.
  • If "point pressing" is not specified in the game rules you should be moving forward in an attempt to complete/loop the game and not "camping" for points.
  • No emulator save states, slow-mo, rewind, etc.
  • No cheats, e.g. Konami code, Game Genie, etc.
  • Turbo controllers are allowed.

I love Wrecking Crew. I like how you can choose your level so you can practice before going for a straight run. Or you can decide to play it one and done puzzle style and check off the levels as you go. I like the puzzley 1-up system (which is often more trouble than it's worth); although I am proud to have figured out phase 1 on my own, it is pretty necessary to use a guide for other levels. I like the golden hammer (and it's terribly convoluted system of getting it, along with other crazy doll bonuses). Seriously, if you haven't checked out guides about how to calculate that, it's worth scratching your head over. I like how the golden hammer stays with you through future phases until you die. And I like the bonus levels, even tho the one time I found the coin on the first try and scored a 10k super bonus, is sure to be my last. Pretty much, the only thing I don't like, is this...




This is me on phase 12. Trapped in a drum. Because of Spike. Grr. Just patiently waiting for a fireball to get me so I can start over. After all, I had like 6 lives left, so cool. Waiting...waiting...fireball...ok, here we go. And it passes right through me. Yup, when the manual says, "you have to start all over again from the beginning," it doesn't mean the beginning of the stage. It means the beginning of the game (or rather, from 0 points). It's an instant game over. SMH.


I've gotten to phase 13, but my new high is from 12 (thanks golden hammers!). I spent more time putzing around with extra life and prizebomb challenges than focussing on a high score, so more from me to come I hope.
