After much time, I've finally gotten to solder one of these. You can see the needed 4mm spacer for the stick board to raise it to the proper height in the case. There are 4 more things to do: 1) remove the power LED and switch from the original board 2) solder those to this new board 3) solder on the power cable (female microUSB cable) 4) solder on the controller cable (6ft cable) Unfortunately, I ran out of solder, or at least I can't find my spare spool. now more waiting...

So you have 5 things to do.

Yah that's not how this works Jay. 😂 Maybe Rev could contribute some not so tasteful nudes to try to move this project along.

So while there may be a light being seen, there is no brain, yet. I still need to do #5 on my list and program the ATmega chip. With the dry fit of the board into the case, I did discover that this board design will need a few things moved around, so these few boards will be treated as "for prototype use only" I should be able to do all the needed functional testing with this board design. Next stop: programming ATmega328 chips

Next stop: programming ATmega328 chips I now have 3 ATmega328P chips programmed. I do have an additional 3 ATmega328 chips - i've discovered that there is an internal difference between the 328P and 328 chips and they aren't programable in the same fashion. I'll get around to programming these 328 chips, so they aren't wasted. But for now, I can start my functional testing with these 328P chips and my prototype boards. More importantly I've discovered that my schematic for the dpad was not correct. I've brought this with me for the chip programming and testing, but I am not going to bring my soldering equipment with me to fix the dpad wiring. I will probably not be able to fix the dpad for a few weeks, but i can do testing with the thumbstick.
+fdr4prez
It'll still be a couple of weeks before i am home long enough to work on the dpad rewiring, but I think the thumbstick is working good. I've counted all 16 directions. The buttons are working, too: Upper (1), Lower Left (2), Lower Right (3), Enter (20), Clear (18), Pause (9+17) oversample test.mp4

+fdr4prez
The dpad issue fix has been redesigned on paper. I am still traveling, but i may be able to do a functional test this week - but no promises. I have no fears about it not working, but testing is always reassuring. Even if the testing is successful, i will not be able to rewire my prototype board until early May when I'll actually be home. Once the prototype rewired board works, then I need to redo the schematic and re-layout the board in KiCAD.
+fdr4prez
I am finally not traveling, at least for this week and next week. I'll rewire my dpad this week and give it a test.

This is all cool and stuff Frank, but I'm yet to see pics of the box art, manuals and overlays. Cmon man! Pics of packaging or it didn't happen.

Now I just need to find a marketing team. 28 minutes ago, evg2000 said: i was talking to him, each one will be custom. the box will be whatever shopping bag he has at the time; target walmart, etc. the instructions will each be hand written and illustrated. it will awesome! jk Well, I am sure I can reuse some Amazon boxes... The used shopping bags aren't good for the environment, so at least I can claim to be green.
+fdr4prez
Do these two thumbsticks look the same? They are from different manufacturers, so you can see that the body is a little different, so what's the deal? Well, one fits on my board and the other doesn't fit. Why so? well, look at that. One footprint is larger than the other footprint. So instead of choosing just one manufacturer, why can't I support both? After drilling a few more holes on my board, i can now use either: Now no one can say that I am not flexible.

Sounds like a lot of talk that has nothing to do with showing us the overlays. 😞

+fdr4prez
more work traveling for me during the work weeks and while i am at home there are family matters, and household needs, that need to be attended to. but work on this project has been happening behind the scenes. Since I needed to redesign my dpad circuit, and that means new boards need to be laid out and fabricated, I thought that this would be a good time to do some little enhancements. more info to be posted once i am able to.
