Lynx today!

Recently re-acquired a used Lynx. I'm back in the game! The sound is a little quiet. The OFF button doesn't seem to work. I have to pull the power cord or remove  batteries in order to shut it off. But otherwise, it's in good shape.

California Games, Hockey and Baseball Heroes were the included games. Just got a com lynx cable coming in the mail.

Any suggestions of what I should get next?

Slime World, Shadow of the Beast, and Klax are some of the best on the system.  Chip's Challenge is also fantastic.  Really though, there's so much great content on the Lynx. There are only a handful of titles that you should avoid, (Pit Fighter, Tournament Cyberball, Krazy Ace Mini Golf, probably a few others) and even those have their fans.

Wow, that's awful! No, really -- those games are pretty crappy. Unfortunately, you don't have the option of using alternates here: Hockey is the only Lynx hockey title, and while Relief Pitcher is a much better baseball game (and has digitized speech!), it's been out of print for ages and no one will sell you a copy for less than about three hundred bucks.

Whatever you do, get a SD cart first. Most of them come with the entire Atari commercial library, and you can buy physical copies of these games later if you really want to take this route. The Lynx hasn't priced itself out of the range of the average player -- yet -- but it's getting there. That being said, you MUST not acquire ROM images of games currently being sold by their owners -- so take a look at the Songbird and LuchsSoft titles. Loopz is outstanding, but I love puzzle games. Wyvern Tales is also a must if you like RPGs.

I don't know. I kinda like Hockey. It plays a lot like Blades of Steel on NES which I loved as a kid. I think Baseball Heroes is alright too. Anyway, I bought a few more on eBay. Rygar, Rampart, Basketbrawl and Xybots. Should keep me entertained for a while.

I was considering Ponx...

Anyway thanks for the input.

I just remembered my only gripe with Hockey on Lynx is that they misspelled Winnepeg. It's Winnipeg. With two "i"s. I know this because I am from Winnipeg. Anyway, good game otherwise.

Rygar, Rampart, Xybots all recommended.  Ponx, not so much.

Rampart and Xybots are both fairly awesome.  Xybots especially - I really want to go back and finish it, and take some time to explore more.  It really seems like it has a lot of depth for a handheld game of its era (yes, I realize it's an arcade port).

I also really have fun with Basketbrawl.  It's generally panned by the community, but I find it deeply satisfying to smash my opponent's face with the ball, and then make rapid layups over his incapacitated body.  Why nunchuks haven't been incorporated into the NBA in this day and age is a mystery.

Rampart is one of the best games Atari released for any of its systems. It also has the benefit (along with Xybots) of having been overproduced during its commercial run, so it's still fairly cheap if you want to get a physical copy. I myself ignored it for years, and then stuck it in my Lynx because I was bored one day...and found out exactly how massively addictive it is. It's a hybrid puzzle/action/strategy game, and that's a win for me any day.

Rampart is awesome on any system.  On my lynx, i love STUN Runner and Hydro Thunder and Slime World and Chip's Challenge and a lot of others.  Toki is pretty great if you are patient with oldschool difficulty.  Welcome to the club.

If you get your system working and get a flashcart (Retro HQ), i'm discovering some of the homebrews are top in class games.  Have only played a few, but puzzle homebrews like 2048, Asteroids Chasers, and ASSEMBLOIDS to name a few....truly great puzzle games.  I've kicked off an amateur review series on my channel for homebrews, havent even promoted it yet.  But here's a link if you want to see some of the homebrew vids...

Most of the Lynx arcade ports are great: Joust, Robotron, STUN Runner, Xenophobe, Roadblasters, Ms. Pac-man, Xybots, Rygar, Double Dragon, Rampart, Klax, etc. A few are visually impressive but tough to play, namely Hard Drivin' and Steel Talons. Blue Lightning is really cool too.

Some outstanding puzzle games: Chip's Challenge, Crystal Mines (shameless plug -- Crystal Mines II: Buried Treasure has all the original levels plus 100+ new ones), and Super Skweek.

If you enjoy Pole Position, then I highly recommend Checkered Flag as a fantastic racing game that really gives you a good sensation of high speed and decent physics for a flat-track racer.

Best-selling Songbird titles over the past 20 years: Championship Rally and CyberVirus, probably followed by Loopz and CM2:BT.
