Concerto firmware thread

Hi.  Thanks for the couple of members who tried to assist with my sound issues.  For the record, I just received a NOS Pokey chip, installed into the Concerto cartridge, and voila, I have sound!  Somehow the working Pokey chip I removed from an old 5200, must have gone bad (though, I still am puzzled about that)?  Anyway, I haven't had the opportunity to test everything, but all is good in the world right now for me. Thanks again!

Hello all.  I can't get my Concerto to be recognized by my WIndows 11 laptop.  I've loaded both types of device drivers and tried Harmony 1.3 and 2.0x

Anyone have any tips? THoughts? I've made sure i'm using a data transfer capable micro-usb cable.  I don't see anything at all, no cart in Device mgr under com devices.  No sign of anything.

Do you see ANYTHING in Device Manager when you plug it in? Even if it's not recognized you should see "Unknown Device" connected to one of your board's integral USB hub devices.

No.  Sorry for delayed response I was out of town, but I am looking at it right now, nothing.  no device appears in any of my USB controllers, and none in my COM ports via bluetooth, nothing.  Looking in "System Devices" I don't see anything that appears when I run Harmony Cart (either version).  It says "searching for Harmony Cart" endlessly.

THe concerto cart itself works well in my 7800 and I have copied games directly to the SD card on my PC and they've worked well in the concerto.  I just can't seem to see the cart at all in Windows.  I believe i mentioned I did load the drivers, too.

Weird.  FWIW, the Concerto doesn't support bluetooth, so that's to be expected.

Haven't yet touched Windows 11 except in virtualisation, so my understanding of how it handles things compared to 10 and earlier is far from complete.  Having said that, the following to come to mind:

You did mention that the cable is not a power-only cable, so that's good.  Does it work with other devices?

Are you trying to connect via a USB hub or directly to the machine itself?

Is there some new security setting in Windows 11 re: USB devices that may cause it to not be recognised when connected?

Finally, you did mention that you're on a laptop, which means that power management is almost certainly turned on.  Check this article for details as to how that may affect USB detection of the Concerto.

And shorter USB cables as well. My Mateos cart is quite finicky with USB cables and I've found that I have to use a short 1.5ft cable to get it to work reliably to load games to it. I realize we are talking about the Concerto here, but just stating that trying a shorter USB cable is also a good idea.

Thanks for the feedback.  It's not a USB security setting, as I am admin and have all policies opened up for that kind of thing.  Also I don't have power management enabled that would interfere.

It seems more likely to me that despite my best efforts I have not got a good microUSB cable.  Still need to try a few more cables.

Since some will soon be getting (or maybe already have) a Concerto with a HOKEY, and will be playing Ballblazer, I thought I would include this slightly modified version.

The original Ballblazer uses the random number generator in the POKEY to create custom music on the fly. Ballblazer does work without the random number generator, but the music is not as varied. As the random number generator is not yet implemented on Basic HOKEY, I put together a version of Ballblazer with a software-based random number generator so you can experience the custom music now, rather than having to wait for a future firmware update for HOKEY.

Ballblazer (NTSC) HOKEY Basic.a78

Morning all,

Just had a quick question - before I do a deep-dive on the firmware thread... just got my Concerto cart with the built-in HOKEY last week at PRGE.

Is there any setup manual available similar to the Harmony manual, or any setup guide videos? From a quick skim through some of the earlier posts, it looks like the Harmony Programming Tool is also used with the Concerto - is this correct?

Thanks!

Hi,

I just got my Concerto cart yesterday. Pretty quick delivery to Sweden! Cool!

Now, where can I find the latest firmware? Do I have to read through this 40 page thread to deduce it? I've spent some good half an hour already, but I'm just getting more confused. I have 0.94a, which seems to be an old version, but when reading this thread it seems the versioning isn't linear and on some page I read 0.94a is the "latest". Is that still valid?

Why not just have one single page somewhere with all versions downloadable? This feels like beating the swordmaster.

Edit: Seems like 0.94a is not the latest anymore after all. It's something 0.96. However, I only find an NTSC version available on page 38. I have a PAL machine (French "RGB" version). Not my lucky day, is it?

Mine from PRGE shows up as Concerto v1.0 so pretty sure that is the newest?

I'll try to explain the versioning a bit.

On boot it says Concerto Vx.x on the splash screen. I don't think I have made this clear, but the splash screen shows the bootloader version rather than the firmware version, and the bootloader is currently at v1.0.

The firmware is shown on the menu. They ship with 0.95 (though, 0.95 reports as 0.94a). There is a daily build of 0.96 out there though, that many have installed.

I'd have to double check which firmware version I have, but I think it is the one shipped with the production version. Is there a bootloader and/or firmware that doesn't require an acknowledgement (button press) that this is a work in progress?

Also, for future reference is there a place (link) to find all the most recent updates or is this thread the place?

Cheers!

Will HOKEY receive firmware updates through the Concerto somehow while it's installed in cart? If that's the case, that's quite cool.

Yes! And since not every HOKEY user will use a Concerto, firmware updates will be delivered through special 7800 binaries so that other flashcarts (e.g. Dragonfly, Mateos), or any cartridge board supporting a POKEY could also theoretically update HOKEY's firmware.

I just received my cart this week, and it reports 0.94a.  Is the daily build considered alpha?  Or, is final?  I thought thru reading it was a test to see if it fixed a variety of issues.  Will the next full release going to be 0.97? Or something like 0.96a?

There isn't really much to it: format the card as FAT, copy stuff to it, enjoy ;-)

Is there something specific you're running up against?

Not yet, I only got the cart in the post this morning - but I just remember finding the setup process for the Atari Harmony cart pretty challenging, and there was an actual manual available for that cart.

Is there agreement on what model of SD card are compatible with the latest firmware?
