Pokémon Yellow is... weird. It was originally sold as a Game Boy game but when Nintendo rereleased it on the 3DS eShop they stated it to be a Game Boy Color game, and the sprite work has way more detailed colors than any Super Game Boy enhanced original Game Boy game. So, to me it's a Game Boy Color game. That's what Nintendo themselves considers it to be these days and I think the graphics reflect that :)

Compared to Red and Blue running in Super Game Boy, they don't look much different from each other other than the sprites being different in each one. In Red and Blue Version you still get brown Pidgey, yellow Pikachu, green Caterpie, etc during the battles.

The main thing is the sprites on the maps being monochrome. In Yellow you still have light blue walls, hills and plants  if the town is light blue, but in Gold and Silver those walls would be brown, plants would be green and your character has the same color clothes at all times. You know, full color.

VIC-20:
Aerial - 17 min.
Battlot - 17 min.
Bootskell - 3 min.
Cavit - 7 min.
Impetus - 9 min.
Mazy - 4 min.
Neuras - 6 min.
Ruptus - 9 min.

So all of those games were played on the VIC-20 (with 24K RAM expansion), but neither is exclusively a VIC-20 title. Earlier this week, someone in the TRS-80 MC-10 group on Facebook found a Japanese fellow who goes under the name Inufuto who apparently picked up programming retro games sometime in the summer of 2020, and through developing his own cross compiler or at least library, has managed to create 8 different games which he so far has ported to at least 32 different systems - mainly home computers but I saw SMS in the list as well. Certainly those systems have different capacities so I suppose he picked the lowest common denominator and settled on that some systems have smooth scrolling while others don't. The VIC games were made for the Japanese VIC-1001 which is the same except for the character ROM, but unfortunately hard coded for NTSC which means they all would appear to the far left side of the screen on PAL, so I patched (and crunched) them all before playing.

Aerial is a horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up, think a mix of Scramble and Gradius with boss fights at the end of each stage. Very playable even with coarse scrolling, and sometimes it would become "bullet hell" with all missiles flying on the screen.

Battlot is a game where you move from your home base to the enemy base, destroying it as fast as possible while enemy soldiers move in the opposite direction to shoot down your base, so you both need to kill enemies and make your way to shoot their base. The level blocks can be obliterated so you open up more space in the maze, some stages have no blocks at all. Not exactly like anything else I've played.

Bootskell has a flavor of Pengo to it, in that you throw ice blocks onto ghosts. You can also hack blocks to make them disappear. Ghosts do both, so you might get hit by a flying ice block. However you don't die by touching a ghost, only by getting hit by a block. Cute variation of the genre, but not my favorite type of game.

Cavit is something of a mix between Dig Dug and Boulder Dash, in that you dig for diamonds, there are stones that will drop onto the head of monsters. Some fly diagonally just like in Dig Dug but you have no weapon to shoot them. This game probably looks better on the other 30 systems, i.e. MSX, C64 and so on as there were quite awful colour clashes on the VIC version.

Impetus is another shoot 'em up, this time vertical so something inbetween Xevious and Slap Fight! It also has boss fights at the end of each stage, though it suffers a little from the coarse scrolling on the VIC. I'm sure on one of the better systems where it runs more smoothly and perhaps has hardware sprites, it would be even better.

Mazy is a somewhat simple maze game where you pick up knives that you throw at monsters blocking your way, and then find your way to the exit door. Possibly the weakest one of these 8. It is worth noticing that the monster graphics are the same as in Cavit, a properly seen in other games as well that graphics and background music (!) have been reused.

Neuras is another maze game, but this time you pick up playing cards that you throw onto other playing cards. If you get a pair, like two aces or two kings, the pair goes away. You have ghosts here as well, which will be blocked if you throw a card at them, but the goal is to match cards, not hit ghosts. Different for sure.

Ruptus is a variation of Bosconian! You move around in space, finding bases that happen to be the same ships as the bosses in Aerial and Impetus. Some are guarded by power lines that you need to shoot first. Of course there are bad guys flying around as well, shooting at you. Again this game probably benefits from smoother graphics than the VIC can offer, but since I can't name any Bosconian type game for the majority of the 30++ systems, any addition is welcome.

Some of those games I might play more another week, or even try other formats (MSX, C64 are the ones I have readily available - possibly Sord M5 if I can figure out how to soft load a ROM from the multicart, which I'm not sure is possible).

So yeah, no Atari gaming this week as I had my fair share of Prince of Persia. The next round was supposed to start today, perhaps it starts tomorrow.

Here are my times for this past week (November 15th through 21st) on classic systems:

Arcade:

Jr. Pac-Man - 16 min.

Jungle King - 15 min.

Scrambled Egg - 172 min. in 7 sessions

This week I mainly played Scrambled Egg concerning arcade games. There was also one session of Jr. Pac-Man and one session of Jungle King thrown in, in which I made it all the way through the 1st round which I haven't achieved before. Here's some hints:

- On the vines, jump so you reach the next one... the next one should be swung as much to the right as possible at that time, but it also helps if your current one is as much to the left as possible.

- In the river, avoid the crocodiles, only dive up to the surface if there's enough room, and then maybe kill 1 crocodile on the way down.

- With the rocks, listen to their sound... the small rocks will always do two small hops followed by one large hop. They are safe to jump over during the small hops. For the big rocks, run under them.

- In the final screen, if you jump left immediately, you're screwed, so wait until the left indian has moved all the way right and is retreating, then jump over the right indian and keep close to the left one. Finally jump over the left indian so you can directly touch your girlfriend.

In Scrambled Egg, I made it to exceed 30.000 points and get to round 4.

Several homebrew Lynx titles. They aren't old do those count?

Yes, like jgkspsx wrote, all games for classic systems count, no matter if those were programmed 45 years ago or yesterday. We do try to limit to released games though, so you don't count alpha testing of a game in development. Possibly beta testing if your game is mostly playable and you're trying to find balance to it.

We do have the systems cut-off at year 2000, for which there is a modern tracker with the same format that handles all newer systems.

My times for the week:

MC-10:
One Room Adventure - 165 min.

Atari 7800:
Possible Mission - 647 min.

Super A’Can:
Bomb Zoo - 15 min.

Beat Possible Mission (which seems to be the name of choice for bugfixed versions of Impossible Mission NTSC), and a tricky MC-10 text adventure (with my wife).

King's Field (Japanese) for Playstation - 326 minutes
Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22 for Playstation - 50 minutes
Pokemon Blue Version for Game Boy - 115 minutes
Super Mario Bros 2 for NES - 74 minutes
Super Mario Bros 3 for NES - 131 minutes

Progress:

King's Field (Japanese) - I made it to the bottom floor but probably have at least a little bit of leveling up to do and some locked / hidden chests to find if I want an even better sword.

DBZ UB22 - replayed the first block of Kid Goku's build up due to my video recording stopping in the middle of my playing last time.

Pokemon Blue - At Mt. Moon. Caught all 4 Pokemon you can find in there.

Super Mario Bros. 2 - completed as Mario, no warping.

Super Mario Bros. 3 - completed every stage.

A good bit of variety in gaming from my household this week! I've been continuing my playthrough of Pokémon Yellow on the Game Boy Color but also made some time to play some Atari 2600 games for the high score club, and Mrs. Skippy actually took some time to sit down and play Asteroids with me this week too.

I also played a bit of Resident Evil: Director's Cut for the PlayStation to test out a new emulation handheld I picked up, an Anbernic RG280V, but unfortunately the Adam firmware for that device is super unstable and pretty much imploded after an hour of use so I think I'll be reselling that one and picking up a RG351V instead; since it has much better developed and fully stable custom firmware available.

Lastly, it seems like no matter how many games I have I can never go more than a month or two before I get the itch to play Alien: Isolation again, so this week I started what's probably my 4th or 5th playthrough of Alien: Isolation this year

Ineligible
Alien: Isolation (Nintendo Switch) - 615 minutes

Atari 2600
Asteroids - 98 minutes
Galaxian - 56 minutes

Game Boy Color
Pokémon Yellow Version - 277 minutes

PlayStation
Resident Evil: Director's Cut - 41 minutes

Total Video Game Play Time This Week
1,087 minutes (18 hours 7 minutes) [472 minutes eligible]

Individual System Play Times This Week
Nintendo Switch: 615 minutes
Game Boy Color: 277 minutes
Atari 2600: 154 minutes
PlayStation: 41 minutes

As for me, the 2600 dominated this week.

2600:

Popeye - 240 minutes. I played this fairly obsessively and I am happy with my #5 position in the HSC.

Galaxian - 75 minutes.

Asteroids - 60 minutes.

Star Strike - 120 minutes. I bought this for $10 at my local game store without really understanding that it is a scoreless game where you get two tries at most to blow up all the silos. Surely there are few games shorter than this for any system?

I beat the two easy difficulties easily, but was one silo shy of beating the second highest, and I am hopeless on the highest. It looks really cool and there is an addictive quality to it, and without a score it’s a lot less revisitable. It’s funny, I kept playing it partly because it was so short and I thought I might be able to never play it again ?

Raft Rider - 15 minutes of abject confusion. I don’t understand what I am supposed to do with the controller.

Fast Eddie - 25 minutes. It’s not a great game, but it is not not fun.

Q*bert - 20 minutes. So many Parker Brothers games are so much better than they have any right to be, and this is one.

Sega’s Carnival - 15 minutes. I don’t know if I understand what is going on here.

Space Invaders - 35 minutes. Tail end of HSC and also proving to myself I could get my score on real hardware.

7800:

Alien Brigade - 25 minutes. Failire after failure…

Rikki & Vikki - 60 minutes. I have most of the Rikki Egypt levels memorized now.

GoSub - 40 minutes. I played the easy variant of this, which is a bit slow but gets pretty fulfilling.

Motor Psycho - 10 minutes. Couldn’t get the rhythm I had last week.

Impossible Mission - 20 minutes.

Microvision:

Vegas Slots - 120 minutes. 30 minutes of the slot machine and the rest on the much better multiplayer modes.

Connect Four - 60 minutes. The CPU is a bit hard to beat even on easy, at least for me.

Game Gear:

Factory Panic - 25 minutes.

Genesis:

Beyond Oasis - 40 minutes.

Super Nintendo:

Claymates - 15 minutes.

Game Boy:

Trax - 85 minutes between story mode, which I beat, and deathmatch mode.

Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird - 20 minutes. Beat it.

I just found out that the anime that produced this rather underwhelming but not unfun cakewalk of a game is the source of this endlessly appealing meme:

You can’t just lob that in there and not say anything about it. Inquiring minds wanna know!

Ha! It's simply that I got a new (or "new") laptop that's fast enough to do full-speed Super A'Can emulation on the Archive.org website, so I spent a few short sessions playing a Bomberman clone (in one case, interrupted by a very needy dog). That's pretty much it, though I'd like to go back to it and attempt a full playthrough, because how many non-Taiwanese people can say "I beat a Super A'Can game"?

4. Atari Lynx (440) (#6)
5. PlayStation (417) (#4)
6. Atari Jaguar (235)
7. Arcade (209) (#7)
8. NES/Famicom (205) (#3)
9. Microvision (180)
10. TRS-80 MC-10 (165) (#5)

Possible Mission storms straight into first place after removing some of its bugs, taking both the individual titles ahead of another Atari game on Po, namely Popeye which though has a narrow margin to the Japanese version of King's Field on the main tracker. Systems wise, the 2600 and 7800 also dominate, with another two Atari systems (despite no 5200, 8-bit etc) on the top list.

King's Field (Japanese) on the PlayStation also becomes member #467 on the 1000 Minute Club with a total of 1176 min.

At the same time, Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES/Famicom) joins the 5000 Minute Club with a total of 5098 minutes. That collection is now up to 35 different games. SMB3 surpasses Final Fantasy VII (PlayStation), NetHack (PC DOS), Super Breakout (Atari 2600) and Warriors of Rome II (Genesis) with this addition, and is only another 14 min away from GoldenEye 007 (N64) and SteamRoller (ColecoVision).
