Here are my times for this past week (December 6th through 12th, 2021) on classic systems...

 

Atari 2600:

Toyshop trouble - 186 min. in 4 sessions

 

Gameboy:

Millipede (from Centipede / Millipede by Accolade) - 228 min. in 2 sessions

 

This week I played 2 games I didn't play last week. I got reminded of Toyshop Trouble by a little game I've got going on with my father, who uses my PC when I'm not at home. Before I go, however, I put a small plastic, glass, rubber or plush animal on top of a Rubik's Cube sitting there, and set them up so that the animal stands on the face whose color matches the animal's most prominent color. Recently I dug out a few more animals, among them a blue glass fish with white eyes and mouth, whith gets to sit on the blue face with the white face in front. This then reminded me of the color matching you have to do in "Toyshop Trouble" where one of the toys is a blue aeroplane with white touches you have to apply after the blue coating. That's why I started Toyshop Trouble again, but I'm already finished with it for this year because I reached December 24th, after which the game gets easier again and then picks up the difficulty again as it goes into January.

 

Millipede came from a Youtube video about bad arcade ports, and this port is supposed to be bad because it's slow. Which is true at the start of the game, but the speed later picks up, and it does get hard after about 320,000 points. However, the maximum score you get as a starting score here is 800,000 points, while it is 300,000 points in the arcade original and the Atari 2600 versions, so on the Gameboy, it takes quite awhile until the game reaches the level of difficulty you already haver at the start of the original version.

Progress:

Batman - played through the whole game using save states as needed.

Big Nose - played through the whole game

The Jungle Book - played through practice difficulty

Jurassic Park - played through the whole game as the Raptor on easy mode using save states as needed

Power Rangers - played through difficulty 1 as the Red Ranger/Megazord the whole time

Pokemon Blue - got thru Cerulean City

Smash TV - beat the easy mode (it's level 1 only), played through normal mode with lots of save states, got enough keys and beat the bonus boss

Sonic 3 - played through the whole game as Sonic & Tails, getting all the emeralds. Glitched through a wall I never got stuck in before which was amusing.

Tom & Jerry - played through the whole game using save states as needed

Yo! Noid - played through the whole game

It seems like you are the only person so far to play this game, thrice. I noticed that basically there are three versions: US version, European version and Aladdin version of which you specifically played the Aladdin one before. Can I presume that the game you first played in May 2011 is the same as you played this time around?

The May 8, 2011 post is definitely the same version as today (US NES cartridge). Whenever I play the Aladdin version I always put (Aladdin) after it just like the way the Goodset roms are listed. I don't think I owned the Aladdin version until after that May 2011 post.

 

The USA golden cartridge is probably the first release. It was released April 1991, has the slower walking, light blueish-purple Dizzy name on the title screen, 1991 copyright screen, only 100 stars, and items scattered in less convenient locations. 

 

I have seen a picture of the first European release that requires the pass-through cartridge. It looks like a grey Game Genie. I think I recall a video on youtube where someone put one in and it ended up being the same blueish-purple 100-star version.

 

Next came the Aladdin version (known on youtube as version 2) has a 1992 copyright screen, more of a red violet title screen lettering, faster walking, 250 stars and items in locations closer to their destination. Subsequent releases 1993 and 1994 for consoles and DOS have the faster walking and 250 stars retained so I am inclined to consider the Aladdin version to be a re-release with improvements made to the game. That makes sense because Code Masters made the Aladdin with the intention of spending less money to manufacture cartridges after already having cartridge games on the market.

 

The main mystery is where the European version (aka version 3) comes in.

 

Version 3 of the game on the comparison video seems to be based on the Aladdin Deck Enhancer version with just a language selection menu added. Other than that it has the same red violet letters, 250 stars and fast walking speed. It does have different font text though.

 

The video uploader said:

 

"Finding version 3 is a lucky punch really cause the cartridge looks exactly like the one with version 2 (the non-plugthru version). The old plugthru cart (looking like a gamegenie) uses the horrible and ultra slow version 1 from Camerica's US release"

 

What he means here is that the European "version 3" is an Aladdin Deck Enhancer cartridge that was intended for release in Europe. They look exactly like the USA Aladdin Deck Enhancer version cartridges though and other than the language menu and font change it looks to play exactly the same. It also sounds like nobody has made a rom dump of version 3 and released it.

 

Oh I just read the wiki. Looks like version 3 (European Aladdin Version) fixes more bugs and also gets the game more closely resembling the later ports to Sega systems and DOS. Most notably the city map and the 1-up scroll puzzle.

 

Another guy said this which contradicts the first guy:

 

"This isn't right... I have the plug-thru cart and it's not the horrible slow one with the shorter game and only 99 stars. It's the most complete version... So what's the difference between version 2+3 apart from the language selection?"

 

So maybe newer reprints of the plug thru version also have the European Aladdin rom? I'm confused now.

 

All I know is USA only got version 1 & 2. Of which I just played 1.

 

The wiki actually disagrees with both of these people saying the plug thru cartridge is version 2 and that version 3 has its own standalone cartridge form. Who to believe? I haven't seen a picture of a different version 3 cartridge.

YU-NO - 125 minutes

Coming in a bit late, just received and finished wrapping my Secret Santa gifts for mailing so sorry that's just happening now, a cartridge was stuck in the mail for three weeks, aaaah after I get some sleep so the "just a bit out" theme seems common. Whoops.

The Game Boy is back, I left it at someone's house and they didn't even realize I did, and one battery stuff cleanup later (I still really need that cleanjuice thing...) I was back to Tetris, two 2.5hr sittings plus a little extra to be exact. Worst part of it all? I did terrible. I was able to start on higher levels but nah I lost it all. Oh well, have to start again somewhere!

And, other than that one game, as usual, the PC-9801 is in. I've been absolutely loving YU-NO with the English patch, it's just epilogue work so by all accounts the patch should be done by the time I get to unpatched areas, and man am I glad I picked up the PC-9801 version. I tried the Steam release, a modern re-release with redone everything, but the visuals are so flat and uninteresting/the music doesn't sound nearly as nice to me/the characters look a lot worst to me. So far so good, there's a plot but I'm still a little confused.

I was going to have some PC-8801, I bought the original model and had to do some minor restoration work due to a leaky barrel battery, but nope. Turns out the original model, just like the original PC-9801, uses its own special connector (A DIN14 not unlike the one I think Atari used for floppy drives) which none of my keyboards are compatible with. There's also something about an IBM XT with Hercules graphics but that'll wait until I get it booting.

This week I played a pretty sizable amount of Atari 2600, both for the High Score Club and just for my own enjoyment in the case of longtime favorite games Ms. Pac-Man and Super Breakout, but the real highlight of the week was getting to do something I always dreamed about as a kid back in the 90's!

 

Growing up my only console was a Sega Genesis and while I totally loved it I was always a little envious of my friends who had an NES, since as cool as Sonic and Mortal Kombat were I always wished I could play Mario and Zelda on my Genesis too. But alas, there was a console war going on and Sega games were only on Sega systems and Nintendo games were only on Nintendo systems... until now! This week I got a Mega EverDrive Pro in the mail from EverDrive.me and the first thing I did with it was put the built-in NES core to good use playing through The Legend of Zelda on my Sega Genesis! 

 

It was an absolutely wild experience and ridiculously cool to the 90's kid in me that I can now play the vast majority of my favorite NES games on the Genesis. Game compatibility isn't perfect due to the limited processing power available, so quite a few NES games with more complicated mappers like Super Mario Bros. 3 and Castlevania III won't work on the Mega EverDrive Pro, but you can play a lot of simpler NES games like Super Mario Bros 1 & 2, Metroid, The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Castlevania and Castlevania II, Mega Man 2, Pac-Man, and some shooters noticably absent from the Genesis catalog like Xevious and Dragon Spirit too. 

 

It's definitely no replacement for a real NES or RetroUSB AVS and EverDrive N8, but for someone like me who doesn't have any way to play NES games at the moment other than via Nintendo Switch Online, the NES functionality of the Mega EverDrive Pro is a fantastic bonus and some serious childhood dream fulfillment! :-D

Wow, what a week! 30 different systems of which 7 from Atari, several HSC efforts but at the very top is Paper Mario on the Nintendo 64. Road Runner is just over two hours behind, but enough to take the pre-NES title. Three of the Atari systems make the unusually busy systems list with the 2600 at the top.

 

I don't have full stats for most number of systems, but surely 30 would be on the top 10 list through times.

 

Shamus joins the 1000 Minute Club in two incarnations this week:

#471 Shamus (TI-99/4A) - 1029 min.

#472 Shamus (VIC-20) - 1002 min.

 

It is the 19th game for the TI-99/4A and the 1st game for the VIC-20 to enter this club.

 

For those wondering, I'm considering letting the New Year overlap this year to simplify reporting. It means the last three weeks of the season will be Dec 13-19 (current week), Dec 20-26 and Dec 27-Jan 2.

It looks like during my tenure as statskeeper, we hit 30 systems in 2016 Week 53 and 2017 Week 17. Unless that number's been exceeded since you took up the reins (for which I remain exceedingly grateful!), 2021 Week 49 might be in a three-way tie for first?

Not much to say this time. The rare arcade game 1941 Counter Attack finally shows up. The audio is considerably worse than the SuperGrafx version, so you should probably play the SuperGrafx version instead.

Here are my times for this week (December 13th through 19th) on classic systems:

 

Atari 2600:
 

Toyshop trouble - 142 min. in 5 sessions

 

This week I continued to play Toyshop Trouble, but it has changed a bit because I've now managed to pass December 24th, after which the next boards show a smaller number of different toys, but an ever-growing total number of toys to paint, and the timer tops out at 99 seconds. As a result of this, most of my sessions now only consist of one game. Still, the ducks only appear on December 24th and then disappear again until some point in January which is very hard to reach.
