What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2021 (Season 14)

Recommended Posts

Famicom:
Getsu Fūma Den - 95 minutes
Kirby's Adventure - 105 minutes

PC-9801:

CRW Metal Jacket - 200 minutes

Desire - 120 minutes

Xenon: Mugen no Shitai - 90 minutes

So yeah, I had a box come in the mail full of software goodies, user's manuals, driver diskettes, and 256K RAM boards. Out of the box I got five new games, five pretty decently long playtimes were the result. I even remembered to take some photos of things running!

Getsu Fūma Den is a game I really only knew because of Castlevania: Harmony of Despair on the Xbox 360 about ten years back. The stage for it in that game was cool, this weird pixel-y world, and ever since it's just been kinda in my mind. Went on Suruga-Ya, found that a copy wasn't too pricey, and bought it for myself. Definitely a cool game, part-RPG part-sidescrolling action game, but also a little confusing and grind-y at times so far.

Kirby's Adventure is honestly one of my favorite Famicom games I've bought so far, just a really fun platformer that I haven't touched in ages. I have it on my Wii via Virtual Console, when I was ten years old or so I had played all the way through, and having it on cartridge just makes me so happy. It's a funny pink cartridge, the game looks great, the game plays great, and it was only about five dollars to add into the box. So far I've gotten to Level 3, not too far in but I am doing a lot of screwing around and failing at the mini-games.

PXL_20211218_172236337_MP.thumb.jpg.97d89cc4401d53950ea1677da3a5f71c.jpg

CRW Metal Jacket is a game I never thought I'd honestly (reasonably) own, the price climbs easily to $100 on a normal day. A tip from someone in the PC-98 Discord server scored me a $55 copy, much better, and all the disks work great! It's a cool game, "real-time" (slow but sure) strategy where you command your people in mechs around to beat each stage. Bit of story, amazingly no adult content, and it runs on everything down to my VX which means I'm in love. There's even an English translation!

PXL_20211218_172125607_MP.thumb.jpg.9df7e3bc7d6938c945493af2dce94cab.jpg

Desire is an adult title, mind you one with a really cool soundtrack and pretty alright graphics. There's some plot about journalists investigating a relatively unknown research complex on a remote island, moral issues, and the usual adult related whatnots. It's not exactly my favorite game I've bought but hey, at least it sounds really nice.

PXL_20211218_171219344_MP.thumb.jpg.2234f9ec82900865017353a7c4e8b323.jpg

Finally, Xenon, another adult title. Oh joy. You may notice that box looks similar to Desire, I guess C's Ware re-released a lot of their bigger titles on that format for both PC-98 and FM Towns making these two my first physical non-Splatterhouse FM Towns games! This one is a bit sillier than Desire, the plot based around some high school boy with dreams of some outer space station full of women that ends up being real. The visuals are great, the soundtrack is also great, but yeah just a smut VN so not a ton to really say.

I'm fairly excited, work lets off for two weeks starting Wednesday which means I should have a good bit of time to play games. I also have some cool boxes coming in, the start of a "meme machine" (Celeron 766, Voodoo Banshee, and 256MB of RAM in a PC-98) and my first ever MSX (Mitsubishi ML-8000 because I thought it looked cool so I wanted it). The new experiences should be great!

It was a pretty laid back week for me gaming wise this week, just playing one NES game, a bit of Atari 2600 for the High Score Club, and no modern games at all. Since I finished the original Legend of Zelda on the NES last week, this week I decided to start in on Zelda II: The Adventure of Link!

It's a really nostalgic game for me, being the first Zelda game I ever played as a kid, but it's also tough as nails and sometimes just downright unfair. I'm pretty far along in it at this point, with just two temples left to go, but I don't know if I'll finish it or not since man is it ever gotten difficult at this point! I've beaten Zelda II once many years ago, but I'm not sure whether or not my reflexes (and patience) are still up to the task

Xenophobe - 163 minutes

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link - 670 minutes

Total Video Game Play Time This Week
895 minutes (14 hours 55 minutes) [895 minutes eligible]

Atari 2600: 225 minutes

My modest times for the week:

Atari 2600:
Eli’s Ladder - 9 min.
Gamma-Attack - 2 min.

Star Fox - 6 min.

Am I trying games from my old "Atari 2600 games released in North America and never played on the tracker" list? Yes, yes, I am.

That said I'm not sure if any of these might have been played since @carlsson took the reins? After the above three are removed, my list has the following left:

Basic Math
Berenstain Bears
Codebreaker
Extra Terrestrials
Gauntlet
Glib
Hunt & Score
International Soccer
IQ-180*
Killer Satellites
Math Gran Prix
Out of Control
Party Mix
Strawberry Shortcake
Super Challenge Baseball
Super Challenge Football
Sword of Saros
Video Jogger
Video Reflex

Don't remember if Birthday Mania should be on there too (I don't remember if it had been found or dumped yet when I made the list). Funny thing is, I think I played Super Challenge Baseball in 2009 right before I started posting on the tracker.

I played Sword of Saros and Killer Satellites and both Super Challenge sports games this summer… not sure if I reported them.

It looks like you didn't report them, but @oyamafamily did log Killer Satellites this year.

(Unlogged gaming?!?! Heresy!! ;) )

As far as I can tell, the list of untracked classic Atari 2600 games is down to the following 16 games:

Berenstain Bears
Codebreaker

Gauntlet (*)
Glib
Hunt & Score
International Soccer
IQ-180*
Math Gran Prix
Out of Control
Party Mix
Strawberry Shortcake
Super Challenge Baseball
Super Challenge Football
Sword of Saros
Video Jogger
Video Reflex

I understand that Basic Math also is known as Fun with Numbers, which was tracked earlier.

(*) @Kurt_Woloch played a hack of Dark Chambers in February 2018 called Gauntlet, but apparently it isn't the same game.

Wow. Xenon 2 really strayed far from the original!

Surely you were joking about that one? Obviously Bitmap Brothers' shooters Xenon and Xenon 2 are not related to the PC-98 Xenon. If anything, the Brothers' games may have more in common with Xenon 1. There is also the futuristic sports game Xeno plus many other variations. Yes, it is an elemental with a cool name but perhaps a tad bit overused.

OK, here we go...

Genesis:

Mystic Defender - 20 minutes. This semi sequel to SpellCaster (really just another adaptation of the same manga) is more polished and less interesting, but still lots of fun.

Uncharted Waters New Horizons - 20 minutes. Spent 18 minutes from an old save game getting ready to sail and 2 minutes getting plundered and sunk in the Straits of Gibraltar. Very realistic!

Dragon's Fury - 90 minutes

ATARI 2600:

Fatal Run (for HSC) - 345 minutes

It took me many learnings and attempts to reach the main objective: solve 32 stages to enter the rocket launch site and save the world, which has been contaminated by radiation. Highest score:  341,120 / 22-24 people saved per stage (estimated average).

I thought I played more games than this, but apparently not.

Genesis
Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis (Genesis) (ROM hack) - 40

In case you couldn't tell by the title, this is on the Genesis. That's right, if you play this in a Mega Drive, it will EXPLODE. Well, no it won't, but you know. Anyway, stupidity aside, it's that ROM hack that makes the original game play like the horribly awesome GBA game Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis, so it's Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis (Genesis). I wish that there was an & Knuckles on the end just to make the title more ridiculous, but there isn't. This is relatively accurate to the GBA version, but it's not a perfect recreation, as the broken scoring from Marble Zone's blocks on GBA was not implemented, and neither was the GBA's tiny field of vision, horrible music, or excessive slowdown, making this much easier and less painful than the real GBA version.

Previously, someone (possibly you) played a game called "Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis [Sonic 1 ROM hack]". Would this be the same hack, or yet another one so there's both Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis and Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis (Genesis)?

A week with some excitement and a week with some disappointment.

disappointing was that Codebreaker and Hunt and Score need a special controller and I couldn’t play them. Exciting was I beat the Atari at Math Gran Prix.

times were all Atari 2600.

Eggomania 167. Scored over 100,000.
fatal Run 5 for HSC.
Kaboom 138. Broke 4500 several times and 5,000 once. Those are very good scores for me. Getting the hang of it after many years.
Klax 49 for HSC.

Math Gran Prix 10. Beat the computer.
Solar Fox 199.

fun week. Really enjoyed Kaboom.

If you got a Video Touch Pad (for use with Star Raiders), supposedly one is enough to play Hunt and Score though you might need two in order to play Codebreaker. Hardware wise, it appears that the Video Touch Pad, the Keyboard Controllers and the Kid's Controller all work in the same way.

Here are my times for this past week (December 20th through 26th) on classic systems:

Arcade:

Millipede - 42 min.

Scramble - 7 min.

Scrambled egg - 29 min.

Solarian (8bitworkshop, Galaxian Hardware) - 2 min.

Turtles - 100 min. in 3 sessions

Atari 2600:

Duck Chase (8bitworkshop) - 3 min.
Toyshop Trouble - 24 min.

Colecovision:

Climber Game (8bitworkshop) - 3 min.

Commodore 64:

Climber Game (8bitworkshop) - 2 min.

Sega Master System:

Climber Game (8bitworkshop) - 4 min.

This week I replayed the arcade games Turtles, Millipede, Scramble and Scrambled Egg. It's been a long time since I last played the original version of Millipede, but this time I didn't go for 300.000 points which would have taken too long to reach. In Turtles, I made the roof (after 8 floors) while in Scramble I didn't get beyond the UFO stage. Scrambled Egg was also a rather lackluster effort.

And then there are the 8bitworkshop games. For those who don't know, 8bitworkshop is a platform where you have an editor on the left and an emulator screen on the right, and you can select from many older systems to emulate. For each system there are also several demos, some of which are games. For all of those you can see the source code on the left to learn from. The Climber game I played appears in the demos for Colecovions, Commodore 64 and Sega Master System (among others, probably), so it was ported to those systems. In that game, you climb to the top of a building to save your girl or be fetched by a helicopter, depending on version. It's similar to Frantic Freddie and Squish 'em. Duck Chase is an Atari 2600 game on the same platform written in Batari BASIC where you try to run over as many ducks as you can with your car over the course of a minute. And there's a game called Solarian which is similar to Galaxian and appears on Galaxian hardware as well as on the Colecovision (but I didn't play that version for long). What impressed me the most there, however, is the Pseudo 3D Road demo for the Atari 2600 since there are only a handful of games with that theme, and although this is just a demo, it looks gorgeous with all the clouds that change color over time, and the road is smooth as well. I've included a screenshot of that demo.
