Pondering on playing the Patent V6 version for a change (or the Marius version better PAL timings but still easier). If you only have the original version then we can factor that in the tables.

I just tried a few of the tracks from the Patent Pole Position.  What masochist created these tracks?  I can't even qualify. 

 

Next round is gonna be pure evil.

As you may have seen from John's comment on Atarimania: "For the first 5 incarnations of my hack I put a lot of thought and effort into the layout of the tracks but for this final one I just made them using a small BASIC program so they were entirely random. Some of those twists and turns make this version of the classic rather challenging indeed!"

 

I saw there are programs to make your own tracks, though I don't know if those would be compatible with the proposed version, plus that it might be tricky to design such tracks, corner by corner. Unlike e.g. Scalextric on the C64 (or for that matter Rally Speedway), it isn't really WYSIWYG.

 

Edit: I realized that just like in the original Pole Position, you must qualify in less than 73 seconds out of the 90 on the timer, i.e. there needs to be at least 17 seconds left in order to start as #8. After a number of attempts, I managed a crash free lap which granted me exactly 17 seconds left so I qualified for the main race. Possibly you can go a little faster but the first three tracks seem really difficult so probably not a lot of room for going faster. It probably is worth pointing out if we're playing this game, and also factoring in that those who would play the original PP game would have a much easier task of qualification on all the tracks.

Also, I must get onto the Rally Speedway tracks for a future round.

So we need to find version 01 to 05 of Patent? I suspect people like me assumed 06 was the latest version not each having it's own tracks. If anyone finds v01 etc post it on the game thread and we'll play that instead. I'll check things out in the morning. Thanks.
