Can you hack the start up screen?

You could with the One X... One of the side effects of swapping the internal drive was to lose the startup animation. You could put it back by after doing the swap, pulling the drive back out, connecting it to a PC and copying it back in. I CBA with that, so I just left it and within a week the start up animation re-appeared, so I assume it's part of the update process. Which I suspect means, yes, you can update it, if you can get the drive out and plug it into a PC. Which I'm not sure you can on the Series machines given they're NVME drives and probably proprietry. But even if you do, It'll likely get overwritten at some point by an update. Possibly...
