Help with fried Atari 520ST

Recommended Posts

Howdy, new in here, want to ask for some help if I may: I am new in the platform and got an Atari 520ST from a friend, just the CPU. Searched online and found the schematic for the power and bought the DIN, connected to the 2 5+, +12, -12 and grounds. When connected smelled burnt and saw a little white smoke. Disconnected immediately and later realized the schematic was backwards, and was not the cable, so I basically switched the cables.
Feeling bad but looking for guidance on how to find the burnt or faulty components to replace. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Just watched your original video and the Joe's repair video. I'm sorry that you had these troubles. It's easy to get those pinouts backwards. I've gotten some backwards before because it wasn't clear if the pinout was looking at the port, or the cable. Luckily, I've never had that problem with a power cable. I was also glad to see that Joe was able to fix it for you so easily, and what a class act, to upgrade the TOS for you.

Congratulations on your new 520!

Yeah it's funny how this female male connectors can get confusing.

Is it the female on the computer or the male? ?

EDIT:   Anyways I blame the women for this confusion.  ?

Just be thankful that there are *really* only male and female connectors... <rolls eyes>    :)

PS and to the OP, 'gratz on getting it going!

I guess everyone noticed that very early version of TOS in that machine.

AFAIK, only a handful of early 520ST's came with TOS not in ROM, but

run from floppy.

I've been around ST's for a few years (1985) and I have never had an

ST that didn't have TOS in ROM...

Yes this this was indeed TOS version less than 1.0V ?

? Since some of you are die-hard Atari fans you should read this: The Atari ST, Part 2

I've actually read that before. I believe it was posted in some of the ST forums.

It's actually very good stuff. I enjoy reading about that time. Don't know if we

will ever see it but I'm looking forward to the sequel to Atari Inc, Business is

fun. I think it's supposed to be called Atari Inc, Business is war.

It should cover much of that time frame...

Thanks for the link.
