Atari 130XE keyboard rebuild: vintage keycaps on modern switches

I see said the blind man as he picked up his hammer and saw.

What he lacked in vision, he made up in foresight.

The result being he was a hell of a carpenter!

Very rough ideas, food for thoughr, enjoy my chicken scratch. A nice smooth up and adjustment might make something useful out of my mess.

How's this? I'm officially out of blank bottom row caps (caps from the bottom two rows - the other rows have a different rake on the top of the cap and a different lean). If anyone else has any ideas that get incorporated into the bottom row, one or more existing legends will have to go...

The Inverse Atari key to the right of the spacebar is strange, I think the Fuji escaped the box, so close to how another key looks it could go.

-edit- I see why those two keys need to be slightly wider and the bottom edge on the one is broken, odd how I saw that but my sight fails on other things.

Maybe we should have Poll on which are the best keys to run with.

I really like this one. Smaller one is also great, still undecided between the two.

Cool, but everyone and their grandma want the classic Atari logo, not this modern-ish iteration. ;-)

I like it, even if it is not official Atari logo. A modern touch on a modern hardware mod. Besides, this keycaps are not an official Atari product therefore I don't mind personal touches of the people involved.

for now, i'm leaving them all in. if you choose custom keycaps, the kit will come with them all and you can pick and choose as you wish.

if you will be using the github svg files to requisition your own caps, it will be a little bit before i can get the modified files into @ScreamingAtTheRadio's github repository for you to download. He has discovered the stock cap legends aren't actually gray as i had them, but a little brownish, and we're working now on getting that as right as we can, then the new files will be uploaded. If you will be ordering caps as part of your order, you don't need to worry about this.

My free hand drawings in paint left a bit to be desired. Finger on a laptop mouse pad was tough.

The Fuji is actually two stylized pong paddles bent up against the center line.

Later rendition was a space age 'think rockets' stylized design with flare added.

this is the latest version of the beige cap set, which will be uploaded to github shortly

if you notice, it has all the variations of the inverse key that were asked for, but only one bell bottom logo, next to the left shift key

if anyone has a great idea for a replacement Esc key, let me know, i'll incorporate it if possible

Is that the "Grumpy Bastard" version of the "I wanna get the hell out of here" (better known as escape) key?

i actually took that one out to put a single bell bottomed fuji back in since someone said they'd use it. it was very close in design to the one by the left shift key.

i don't know about a poll. i was discussing with @ScreamingAtTheRadio and told him if there started being more ideas folks would actually use than there were blank keycaps to put design on, that i'd just have all the designs in a separate file they could choose from and i'd insert the right one when the caps were ordered. but for now, we're ok.

they'll both come with your keyboard if you order custom keycaps. then you can change back and forth as you wish 😁

Oh not poll to add keys, A poll to weed out the worst or select the best from what is, Then XL Freaks and people who Scream at Radios would be able to better use the empties or replace duds. I do see your point though.

I think just putting the extra keys on the side of the spacebar is awesome

F1F2spacebarF3F4 with the rest of the keyboard pretty much the stock, and the extra spot for the F-Keys at the top like it already is.

the lower left shift split off key isn't really there now because stabilizer wont fit with it. But maybe it can work with some future brainstorming.

I've thought of that, but as you know, keycaps are sized by Units. the alphabet keys are 1U wide, tab is 1.5U, control is 1.75U, but 3U is the widest up to the spacebar at 6.25U. the entire XE spacebar cutout is 9U, hence the keys beside it to fill the space. if your Fkeys were 1U each, the smallest, you'd need a 5U spacebar, but there isn't one. if your a one handed spacebarer, as am I, you could have a small 3U spacebar with 1.5U Fkeys. if you have another idea, I'd love to hear it

if you're talking about the tiny left shift with the blank key beside it, it doesn't need stabs. stabs are only used on 2U and wider

Since it's a unified Keyboard PCB, the stabilizer mounts have to be there whether we use them or not, it may not be possible to orient the switch connections and still route the traces.

the latest version of the custom keycap set. remember all the caps shown will be sent with your keyboard or kit, so you can choose whichever Esc and Inverse keys you want. Also note that the left Shift key will be normal sized when shipped to you. we will be ordering three keycap sets for paid orders on monday. any more suggestions for alternate Esc key design is welcome. I was thinking about the 4 player characters from M.U.L.E.

While I was @ScreamingAtTheRadio and getting my @XL Freak on, it thought...

MULE keys sound nice, dupes of commonly worn keys for the future might be good too.

I do not see the original key caps for those who a replacing a bad keyboard and want it to appear as stock otherwise. Maybe fill in some of the blanks with those. The original Return, Delete Bk Sp, Caps, Control, Full size space bar.

The unified keyboard kind of relies on that a bit so folks can choose.

If not using many extra custom graphic keys judicious striping of key cap prints across differing orders might allow to get a full extra keyboard after a number of orders so many orders etc. or not in which case do them all up ;)
