Season 19 Round 11 - Cobra Triangle

This is one of my personal favorites.  There is an exploit where you can loop the first level over and over again by dying and recollecting the 1-up.  This is normally used to fully power up the boat before leaving level 1.  Please don't do this.

General HSC Season Rules:

• To participate, just post a score to the thread. Anyone can join in at any time.
• A picture or screenshot is encouraged when posting a score but not required.
• The season is 15 rounds long.
• Games will be posted on Sundays and run two weeks through Sunday at 11:59 PM CST.
• Do not exploit game glitches, take advantage of 1-up loops or intentionally die in order to replay a level.
• If "point pressing" is not specified in the game rules you should be moving forward in an attempt to complete/loop the game and not "camping" for points.
• No emulator save states, slow-mo, rewind, etc.
• No cheats, e.g. Konami code, Game Genie, etc.
• Turbo controllers are allowed.

Nice.  I recently beat this for the first time.

 

High score will depend a lot on doing well in the target stages.

I think that 1up was put there so that players can fully upgrade at the beginning of the game. It's what I do when playing casually, but I wouldn't do it in a contest.

Yup. That's what I mentioned in the post.  It's a great trick if you're just playing alone to beat the game.

Another thing, guys. You only need two speed upgrades to beat the game. Any more than that is an unnecessary difficulty increase. I start with one upgrade and get the second much later in the game when I need it for the ramps.

 

I also recommend maxing out missiles and upgrading FIRE until you have the forward spread shot. Homing missiles make it a lot easier to do well in the target stages which gives huge points as well as extra lives.

I can't quite get a good feel for this game.  Love the racing parts, but not so much everything else -- save the men, dispose of mines, etc.    I don't think I'll beat this one  ☹️

Own it, but don't remember it hah. Not bad, takes some getting used to, but fun. I did notice that when I went to the right on the first stage, I ended up with a different stage 4 than when I went to the left (guard people vs race w/rapids). I can see myself coming back to this one. I also like that some of the sound effects are from Kung Fu

Cobra Triangle - 41,100

 

Yeah, there are multiple paths that give the stages in different orders. One of the toughest stages near the end can be skipped entirely by taking a different path.

I do have a strat for the second waterfall. Just activate force right after the first ramp and all the other ramps will line up. I saw someone do it in a speedrun before. Otherwise that's one of the hardest stages in the game. As it is, I think the shark is by far the hardest.

That's a good tip.  Not having to deal with the whirlpools would make that much easier.
