Bomber 2,170 (8) good version of the classic - I did put a couple of variants as bonus levels in my game Gravity!

Shoot 1,440 1/16 secrets - need to stick with the movement interesting Berzerk style game with a lot of potential

Snake 1,305 again a decent enough game

BTW:  To start a game of RotF, move in any direction during the intro screen.

This info I could have used maybe 5 mins ago LOL.  I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I couldn't get game to start.  I thought maybe I had downloaded the wrong rom.

Anyway, score to report for KD:  2500

Edit:  now one for Fungi:  16605

@therealbountybob in Alien Assault the top row of UFOs are placed there for extra points but also distract you from the main goal at hand which is to shoot the bombs.  Going after them is a good idea in lower rounds for the extra points when you have some spare time between bombs.  But probably it is best not to get distracted by them in later rounds.

Fun fact: those UFOs at the top were a last minute addition to the game.  My brother suggested adding clouds or something up at top to help fill in the blank screen and add a third speed of parallax scrolling background (satellites and mountains are the other two). So I thought about it for a minute and added UFOs instead of clouds.  Then I thought, hey, let's also be able to shoot them!

I tried a couple of the new ones.

Intellidiscs: 400.  Yeah that's right, I stunk LOL.  Didn't really get into it obviously :)

Alien Assault 2121: 52810.  Should have scored higher but I stopped shooting the UFOs up top.  Fun to get into a rhythym.

Space Assailant: 750.  I really need to turn the music off on these ones, they're not my cup of tea.  But I liked this one well enough.  Only beef is that its kinda jarring that after you die you just reappear on the left.  No death noise, no animation.  Just you died there and now you start over here as if nothing happened!

Prince of Persia (2021): Got the sword, beat the first guard, escaped the first level?

I think the final version of this was just released - here's the thread:

Awesome and amazing port, honestly looks better than the NES version. I've never been good at PoP, though - this is about as far as I ever get.

Played Albert.  Finished level 3 but apparently that's all the levels I get?  Downloaded from fandal site.   I got this 60 fps message when starting up so perhaps related.  Enjoyed it while it lasted though.  Great graphics.

I downloaded it from Fandal too and got to level 7 on PAL. TRBB got to level 8. Perhaps the game is made in such way that if it detects NTSC, it goes into demo mode for technical reasons?

Aha, I tested in emulation and found this:

PAL 800XL 64K: Extended memory not detected. Only demo levels will be available.

NTSC 800XL 64K: 60 fps system detected. This game works properly only on 50 fps.

Ideally it should also say "too little memory" but probably they forgot to test/display both messages.

I suppose an NTSC 130XE would work, except that it is unsupported. A PAL 130XE most certainly is recommended.

Edit: Just tested, and indeed an NTSC 130XE (or perhaps 800XL with memory upgrade) would let you enter level 4.

Some replays:

Albert - Had another go and got to level 9 (PAL 130XE / 1050 / MYDOS / MYPICODOS menu). Not a game for me but I might complete it at some point if we play it here.

Kooky Diver 4,900 the clamdom deaths at least bring the game to a nice ending before you get fed up

ROTF 33,859 (9) all my deaths are due to playing left handed re positioning!

Space Assailants is my final replay, it's on screen now...

Space Assailants 18,750 All the makings of a great invaders game, just remove or improve the bottom screen so you can see or perhaps it's the tumbled off stage of the animation that gets you, all my deaths were unexpected... would like to see a sequel to this game guys

EVERYONE - Shall we hold off playing POP and play it next round?

It's a good one - definitely worthy of a full round of HSC play. My only concern is that it might be hard to judge who's ahead. There's no in-game score (that I'm aware of, though I honestly didn't play too long). You could rank by level reached, I suppose. I'm up for it!

 Does the gameplay pick up in 1 player mode - at what stage ?

It really does pickup!  It was around the 70-80k mark it starts and really starts ramping.  Was surprised at the rate of pick up as well vs the starting rate.

I don't specifically recall where it really jumps as it did not take me long after that 70-80k mark to get my score up.  It restarts up exponentially.

I got a bit bored by the time the 2nd baddie type appeared but from what you are saying it may still be a good 1 player game also - will play again when get time

Latest Tables below (excuse formatting but there is too much to do, so it's just from my spreadsheet)

probably scoring based on number of games played, will fiddle something together next week. There will be a season catch-up round (excluding games on this round) after the next round which is "Prince of Persia" unless anyone has other suggestions?

For anyone wanting to try a few out the most competetive games from a HSC point of view (of those I've played!) are Return of the Fungi, Space Assailants, Kooky Diver, Cross Bomber and Alien Assault  Everyone should check out Albert too even if only to say WOW!

Reminder this round ends Monday 1st November 12pm UK time

Some more games to report!

Cross Horde:  2985.  Fun little game but starts so slow!

Overflow:  4180.  Love the plumber graphics.  I really enjoyed this.

Betty's Issues:  Interesting idea.  I grabbed some jems or whatever they were, walked around.  Eventually died.

Piracy 1621:  Well I beat it (as per attached screenshot).  I didn't really understand why sometimes the islands had barriers and sometimes they didn't.  But I enjoyed beating the pirate ships and getting the booty!

Sokoban:  I did just the first level, 256 steps.  I love playing Boxy Boy (TurboGrafx-16, although I've played similar on GameBoy too).  This version had something I really liked though:  press the button to undo one last step!  Wish the others had that!

WAR:  26770.  I know this is an impressive feat and I do like shooters, I just didn't get into this one.  Finer graphics at the cost of colour isn't my thing

River Raid on Mars:  *LOVED* this one.  I admittedly consider the original River Raid one of my all time faves, and didn't enjoy the Winter version we played not that long ago, but this one did it for me.  The loading screen was fun.  Opening title was fun.  I was bummed out it quit on bridge 12.  I didn't keep track of my score but it was more than 20,000 for sure, less than 30,000 (as I remembered getting that second bonus life but not a 3rd).  I hope they finish it!

Couldn't get Kooky's Quest to load (on an NTSC 1200XL using FujiNet).   [EDIT:  My guess is I had an original xex by mistake (not the 2021 version), which I believe requires BASIC, and would explain why it wouldn't load]

I've got six more on my to do list, will probably tackle them tomorrow night.

Also played Ramses' Revenge (link on 1st post), should be the really annoying precision game that I quite like! Got a few keys but need to play more, perhaps a bit too twitchy as all deaths from movement not baddies or maybe a different stick required (was it tested on Joystick? -  just a thought!)

:)
