That's odd. I just hope Atari doesn't take down the info on that sight. I use it quite a lot.

Same.  It's a good resource that wouldn't be easily replaced, but I can't see Atari spending a million dollars on a site just to take it down.  They must have some reason for buying it.

That being said, I'd gladly sell AtariProtos for a million :P

Dear Lord, please, no! Moby Games is not perfect but it's still a very good resource, and it works reasonably well at the moment. It has already gone downhill during the first takeover period by Gamefly in 2011-2013. Thankfully then it got sold again and the new owners rolled back the changes, making it useable again.

The last thing it needs is these clueless jokers from ASA (which PC Gamer rightly calls a "zombie company") taking over.

They're also investing in Antstream, which they may try to buy down the road(?). My guess is that they're going to focus on game history and retro game services as their niche instead of trying to be Ubisoft or EA.

And Antstream seems to be the biggest advertiser on Mobygames, so if Atari is buying Moby for the ad revenue, it may not work out as planned ?

Nobody purchased Atari, you’re thinking of the Soulja Boy confusion, which is just him being confused.

Mobygames under Atari sure makes more sense than hotels and crypto schemes. I’d rather see them work on history and preservation than on suing t-shirt and sticker printers.

The Antstream purchase is interesting to me. It will probably be mutually beneficial, and Antstream seems like it needs the money.

Do you seriously think that people behind speakerhats, African casinos, and a slew of other desperate money making schemes have all of a sudden reexamined their priorites and will now proceed as gentle & caring historians-preservationists? That would be quite a turnaround, but somehow I doubt that's their agenda.

These are not the same people. Fred is gone, along with the management that was with him. This is a new CEO, new crew. The CEO, Wade Rosen, also owns Ziggurat Interactive.

It's possible. New CEO Wade Rosen seems to be more into our "core values" and less gimmick-driven than Fred Chesnais. I don't see how they'd monetize it, but that's his job, not mine.

Then again, this silly little thing came out on his watch, so please don't think I'm wearing rose-colored glasses.

I hope this does not turn into another Nintendoage debacle.   I hope the database stays open online for people to use it.

Exactly.  It's a resource people have been relying on for over a decade at this point; it'd be a huge shame to lose it, or to have it fall victim to the OMG PAYWALL ALL THE THINGS mindset.

Assuming that there is a change of direction for Atari SA, this may be an early-ish visible indicator of their future intent.  Maybe.

Good point.  It's easily one of the most searchable databases, although there are some errors in it.   However I can't see many people willing to pay for the privilege of using it, I think people would just go off and create their own DB.  It's not like this information isn't already out there.
