Colecovision Sega Controller 2 Action Buttons?

Does anyone know of a way to convert a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive controller to be compatible with two button trigger games on the ColecoVision? Would a Master System controller work?

Also has anyone heard of the Joy-Sensor controller by Suncom? It looks more ergonomic than the original controller but it might be less responsive. I can't find any information of that controller online.

Mostly I just want an ergonomic controller to use with the ColecoVision. I know that there is a expensive large arcade style controller and that there is a custom NES style controller but I'm looking for something that's both ergonomic and has a dpad.

Thank you for your help.

I actually make a Genesis controller mapped for the Colecovision with 8 buttons of function instead of two.  I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to make any more and probably won't be able to until the second week in January.  Other than repairs, they've always been my top seller.

That's great to hear! I'm guessing you have 8 buttons on a 6 button Genesis controller because you use the start and mode buttons? What buttons are not mapped to the colecovision gamepad? The numbers 7, 8, 9, and # aren't used very often as far as I can tell. I know 1 or * is used to start most games and that 0 is used as a pause button for games that support it.

Here you go.  This controller is mapped properly and works like a coleco controller (A&B buttons fire independently for games like tutankham, etc.) but less buttons of course. Some might pop up and say I like this button mapped and not that.  Well... this is how I built them and I don't plan on changing it lol

Thanks for the photos! I like the button mapping; having 1 for start makes sense. Do you use existing sega controllers or do you build your own to make it compatible with the colecovision?

How much do you sell these controllers for? I found an custom NES styled cpntroller selling for $45 on ebay but I'm not why people buy those seeing that the NES controller is very uncomfortable (and only has 4 buttons).

Please send me a message when you are making these again!

You've welcome! :)  I build them myself.  It's an existing Genesis style controller that I remap myself.  My cost is 40.00 plus shipping and any paypal fees.  Retrogameboyz (who does the original NES controller mods for various systems) does excellent work and him and his wife are very wonderful people.  However I was like you in the thought of how uncomfortable the NES controller can be so i started building the Genesis 6 button controllers.  He has a nice alternative to that though.  He designed and 3d prints a more comfortable controller hand piece that his snes controllers fit into.

Retrogameboyz was kind and helpful when I asked him on his ebay store account if he could test a sega 3 button controller with one of his Y-Cable splitters. He helped me find out that the colecovision controller and Sega controller interfere with each other when used in conjunction. He also sells great joystick style controllers for various systems which I'm interested in but I'd first like to get a traditional sega gamepad.

I think people like the original NES controller mostly because of its simple yet iconic design.

True.  When I first got my NES back in 87, I played SMB so much I had blisters on my thumbs and indentions in my palms from the corners.  I thought it was great though!  Then the SNES came out years later and to date I still say that's the best and most comfortable controller ever made.

Yeah same here, only I got blisters from the N64 paddle as a kid. Especially from Mario Party 1!

Would the Seagull 78 Controller Adapter help with two button compatibility?

I have one of these, I should try it.

Is this price with me supplying the controller to you?

@Ruggers Customs could you do the same to a jaguar controller? Would be great to have all the buttons available.

I have no plans to make an Atari Jaguar controller for the Colecovision.  I'm afraid my Genesis 6 button conversion will be it from me controller wise.
