Intellivision Keyboard Component vs. ECS--fundamental differences?

Recommended Posts

Forgive me if a thread already exists for this, but I couldn't find it if it does.

Was wondering what the major differences are (other than rarity) between the first barely-released computer module and the more common second one.  Game compatibility?  Programming abilities?  Memory?  External accessories?

I never saw either of these back at the time of their respective releases so all I know are the bits and pieces from collector guides.

The Keyboard Component adds a second CPU, 16k of 10-bit RAM, a 40x24 high resolution text layer, two expansion ports.  The integrated tape drive is block addressed, with high speed indexing, and completely automated. Its Basic cartridge fits the KC expansion port and is a full 8k Microsoft edition but has no way to program Intellivision graphics or sound.

The ECS Computer Module adds 2k of 8-bit RAM, a second sound processor, two additional controller ports (also used by the computer keyboard and music keyboard).  Its Basic is proprietary and incomplete.  The user has to provide a standard audio cassette recorder for storage.

The 10-bit ram in the KC is a key difference as it allows large Intellivision programs to be loaded and executed in ram from tape.  KC software is on tape or cartridge and ECS software only on cartridge.

The KC was made in very low quantities and only came out in three US markets, others could order one by mail.  It was discontinued in 1982.  The ECS Computer Module came out in 1983 during the video game crash.  I hadn't seen the ECS in stores either and at the time didn't even know it was released.

@mr_me provided a very thorough answer, but I just wanted to add the following.

Having owned the ECS then and now, and having read about and seen demos of the capabilities of the Keyboard Component, I would put it is way:

Keyboard Component (KC):

Entertainment Computer System (ECS):

Really, I do not think they should be even in the same product category.
