Hack-O-Matic Color Location Table for Adventure

I offered to help StanJr modify the colors on his Undersea Adventure hack, so I made a Color Chart table for Hack-O-Matic for him. I thought it would be a good idea to share this color table with everyone else, too, so here it is. Using this table, you should be able to easily hack all of the colors in Adventure. The Hack-O-Matic location is indicated for each room and item. Before you ask, the "player square" color is not independently changeable, it will match whatever the playfield color is.

As an example, if you wanted to change the color of the Red Dragon to Purple, you would make the following change to Line number 0F80, represented in binary: 01100110. In Hack-O-Matic, 0 would be an empty square, 1 would be a filled in square. You'll have to experiment with different combinations to get the colors you desire. If you want to re-use existing colors in Adventure, that's easy, just check the default values at the defined locations, and that will give you the correct sequence for that color.

I make no guarantees that every value on this table is correct, I did my best to make sure they were accurate, however they were not tested. Changing any item marked "Invisible" may not work correctly, I seem to remember having difficulty with those when I was making Adventure Plus. If someone notices that many or none of these are working, let me know and I'll double check the values.

Thanks for the Image, but holy crap! I have an ADSL connection and it still took two months and three days for that image to load. Does it really need to be half a megabyte in file size to be readable?

I'll try this info out using Hack-O-Matic 2 the next time I get a chance and see what happens. For anyone who doesn't know, Hack-O-Matic 2 is an improved version of the original which is faster and has a few more cool options, such as Flip and Copy and Paste.

oh, and one other thing. Is there any simple way to look at code and figure out where the colors are? A lot of the hacks brewing in my deviant mind will require a color change, and I hate to keep asking and nagging people to help me find the colors if there is a way I can do it on my own!

Any help is, as always, MUCH MUCH appreciated. :) :) :) :) :)

Seems like good things might be coming in the area of color changing.

Sorry about that, and thanks Greg for posting a smaller version. Honestly I just didn't think about it, I guess I'm just used to my T1 connection at work. I was also in a rush to get it posted before I left work for the day yesterday.

Thanks a MILLION! But one question, there are a few spaces on the chart where there is a location, but no color?????? Is there no color designated for that location or am I missing something?

You're welcome! There is a color in the blank locations on the chart, I was just too lazy to fill in the blanks. I should have mentioned that in the original post, again, sorry.

There is no certain way to do it, no. I would just scan the code for any line that starts with "COLU", and change the LDA value in the line of code immediately preceeding it. That's what I did with my last color hack. I'm no expert....I was able to put that Adventure color chart together with the help of the original disassembly from the dig.

Note: where the chart states "Invisible", that is the light grey color (as used for the secret dot). Except for the "invisible surround", which is orange. The background color for all screens (light grey) is at 013D. Also, note that all objects and rooms have two color values in the Rom (color & b&w).

Thanks, that was very helpful!
