For the first time I beat Super Mario Bros. with no warps or save points. Only took 30 years! To be fair though I didnt get serious until this week to actually beat it properly.

that can be a real slog!  For me Worlds 7 and 8 were a pain in the butt 35 years ago and more of a pain in the butt now that i'm older and slower, lol.

even now my preference is World 1-2, warp to World 4-1, World 4-2 warp to World 8-1, lol.

Thats what I was doing to practice for World 8. When I went for the complete game I could not keep my flower power for the last hammer bro and bowser. I ended up getting past both of them being small somehow. Now on to the next childhood game. Im thinking maybe 3 but that game is so much bigger.

I beat Dark Chambers (Atari 7800) day before yesterday. Actually 1 shot it and beat regular difficulty on my first try. It loops over to hard mode after you beat level Z on regular so I played through a few more levels on hard. I’ll go back and beat hard mode some day probably, looks like it would be much more time consuming, like beating Diablo II on higher difficulty settings; lots of kiting enemies to doors, other ai manipulation, and just remembering to play slowly and deliberately to not make mistakes.

Sub Hunt for Intellivision!  You heard me - f'ing Sub Hunt.

I had never played it before, and I mostly just confused it with Sea Battle in the past, but it is a nice little single-player action simulation.  The Intellivision was ahead of its time in combining action and simulation, and this game does a really nice job of that. It uses the keypad fairly well although some commands could have been streamlined a little.  I was playing in the Intellivision High Score Competition, and I managed to beat the game on the hardest difficulty.  Another user in the competition managed to get a "perfect" score.  Even though I was only a few sunken ships behind him, I couldn't push myself for the perfect score - it would have taken too much stress and yelling ;)

image.thumb.jpeg.ef7d3ead732a6e6c562177ae66fa4848.jpeg

The fact that the score "35" is black lets you know this was level 5.  Another nice touch from Intellivision that the score changes color based on the level you select.  You can also see that I had all 4 subs remaining at the end which means I could have pushed for a higher score with plenty of opportunities to drown those Allied b'strds.  Alas, I will have to try for that the next time this game pops up on my sonar.

Star Ocean (SFC)

I must say that the game looks and sounds fantastic.  The intro is fully voiced (this must have been amazing back in the day), the music sounds great, and there's a ton of variety in the tiles making up the maps, making each area look unique.  I also really liked the dungeons in this game, as they are massive and full of awesome stuff to find.

Also good is the unique skill/talent system.  A character will earn skill points each time they level up, and these can be spent on all sorts of skills, most of which give you bonuses to your stats or new combat techniques.  You can even have a character learn to sketch drawings, which you can sell for profit!  Unfortunately, all of that is pretty much wasted on this game.  I completely ignored any skills not related to stats or combat, and I breezed through the game for the most part.  I guess it's nice that it's an option available to you if you want to really break the game.

Unfortunately, that's basically where the good ends, for me.  The combat is in real-time, and it's honestly a giant mess, but also extremely easy.  The "world map" is basically a handful of towns and caves connected by roads, which are basically corridors funneling you from one location to the next.  There is really no exploration at all.

Finally, although the characters are interesting and I ended up growing attached to a few, the story and dialog are both pretty bad.  It starts out really interesting and you think you might be playing a sci-fi rpg, but that all goes out the window once you get into the game.  The way the last boss is introduced is also completely absurd.

It's a very short RPG at only 20 hours to complete, but there's a lot of optional content, including a couple of difficult dungeons full of nice stuff to find, and even some more stuff to do that you can unlock after beating the last boss.  I didn't like the game enough to do any of that, though.

16. Jeopardy: Sports Edition (Game Boy)

Phoned-in shovelware with questions that quickly repeat. Could be worse, I guess. D-.

17. Overlord (NES)

Beaten for the sixth time, I think, and by exploiting the usual gaping hole in its game design and AI. No need to comment. n/a

18. Lagoon (SNES)

People love to belittle this very early SNES RPG and poke fun at the protagonist's teeny-tiny sword. For me it was just what the doctor ordered: a Ys clone with brisk gameplay, straightforward objectives, and no need to come to grips with complex mechanics or spend time wondering "Should I buy this shield or that one?"

OK, the sword thing was occasionally annoying when the game's hit detection crossed the line into comedy, but it was far from game-breaking. Also, the Kemco house style is such a trip -- some of the same people have to have worked on this and the Drakkhen port, as they sound so similar to each other (and to Kablooey). C+.

Racing Gears Advance (GBA) just beat it with one character. not sure what you get if you beat it with other characters besides the one picture thats unique for each character. God what a fucking blast this game is to play. I wouldve been too busy with Gran Turismo 3 or 4 when this released in 2005 but Im glad I decided to take a gamble on this and get it off eBay. what a classic

19. In Your Face (Game Boy)

Back in 2016 I thought this was a one-and-done affair, but it turns out that you have to play a specific mode to trigger a 5-match tournament. That elevates the game a bit, as there's a small amount of pleasure in learning the strategy necessary to beat the CPU five times in a row. Still, it's a dumpy, frustrating game in which victory has more to do with exploiting the AI than playing anything that resembles basketball. D-.

20. Popeye (Game Boy)

This Japanese-exclusive descendant of Pac-Man is one of the worst-designed games of its kind I've ever seen. Everything is RNG-dependent, some situations are unwinnable, and though I'm glad they threw in infinite continues to try to compensate for that, it doesn't redeem the game. Plus, spinach doesn't help you wallop Brutus, it just makes you faster. I can't stands no more! F.

I didn’t play that many games last year, and most of the ones I played are not games one can “finish” (assuming we’re not counting mobile games or online board games, since this is the Classic Console Discussion forum).

There was one game I beat in 2022 which was ET for Atari 2600. I was never able to beat it as a kid so it felt like a big achievement, though it was also a bit embarrassing because once I took the time to learn how the game works it was actually quite easy.

I made it a point this past year to clear out as much of my backlog as possible so I focused mostly on shorter games. I did finish a few retro games but mostly on compilations on the Switch, and I have a modded NES Mini that has emulation all the way up to PS1.

I know it is meaningless in the grand scheme of things but I have a silly life goal of beating over 1000 games and I'm up to about 700 or so. I doubt I'll beat as many in 2023 because now my backlog doesn't have quite so many short games.

Cool!  There is also a "modern games beaten" thread if you are into such things.

I'm sure you can think of more short games if that is what you are after.  There are even some on the 2600 that would count.

Lennus (SFC)

image.thumb.jpeg.110e56a03b2c92ba823eb0b6c19a0498.jpeg

This was released as Paladin's Quest outside of Japan.  It appears at first to be your typical 16-bit console RPG, with overhead exploration and turn-based combat, but it actually has a lot of very cool things going for it.

First is the bizarre fantasy sci-fi setting.  The graphics are all drawn in saturated pastels, giving the game a very unique look.  The story is alright, but the text is quite bad and clearly written for children.

Second is the mercenary system.  Although you (almost) always have two fixed characters in the party, you can fill the other two slots with mercenaries you hire at towns.  Each mercenary has his/her own attributes, spells, and equipment.  You have complete control over mercenaries in battle, and they can even level up... but you cannot buy them new equipment, so there are a lot of interesting choices to make.

Third is the magic system.  All spells are cast using hitpoints (there are no magic points), and each spell is a combination of either one or two elements.  Each time you cast a spell, you gain a single point in whatever element(s) it uses.  The higher your level in an element, the more effective your spells (and resistance against enemy spells) will be.  There are of course no healing spells; instead, you find healing bottles throughout the game.  Each bottle can be used nine times before it's empty, but you can refill them for a nominal fee at any town.  Another source of healing comes from certain equipment, which can be used in battle to heal the wearer.

It's not a very difficult game, but you need to really pay attention during most battles, because even random enemies can be very deadly.  It's crucial to use the buffing/debuffing spells in nearly every battle after around the halfway point, because enemies become so powerful.  I didn't grind at all, and ended up defeating the last boss at level 52... checking FAQs afterwards revealed I was quite underleveled (most suggested getting to level 60 before attempting the last boss).

Having said that, that last boss fight is brutal.  He has a first form that's not bad, but you get no chance to heal before the second form.  This form does massive magic and physical damage, gets to attack twice per round, and sometimes gets to go first in the round.  All it took to lose the first attempt was a single unlucky round.  My second attempt went much better as I focused immediately on casting physical and magic defense buffing spells, but even so, it was close.  He took out my two mercenaries quickly, but I was luckily able to keep the two main characters alive (you cannot revive characters during battle) by healing pretty much every round, and only going on the offense when it was 99% safe to do so.

Anyway, awesome game!  Highly recommended for anyone that wants to play a very quirky and challenging but fair RPG.
