+therealbountybob
Back in season 9 TGACCRR was the final round of a gruelling slug out between trbb and Scalak for the HSC title... now 9 seasons later it's back! THE GREAT AMERICAN CROSS COUNTRY ROAD RACE After loading the game press [Select] then [Y/N] to load an opposing field from disk (if you have one), then [Y/N] to choose the game "route" you want to race. Press [Start] to go to the map screen then use the joystick including diagonals to pick the city you want to go to, then press fire to hit the road. [Space] is pause and also shuts off the engine noise on the map screen! Scoring 1pt per place on the short routes using the default starting time of day: Los Angeles to New York Seattle to Miami San Francisco to Washington U.S. Tour as a bonus, this is where the game really kick's in, visit all the cities, any route you fancy. You may set the starting time of day by repeatedly pressing [Option] Please work out your own routes, it's all part of the fun. Scoring based on the default table (below) 10th=3pts, up to 1st with 12pts plus an additional 2pt bonus point if anyone beat's DieMON's HSC Record of 71:37 10,878 The key to a good time is to be steady and go fast when the conditions are good and the road is clear. Controls: Hold fire to accelerate, pull back to break. Change gears by releasing the accelerator and then tap Up/Down. To get gas pull over when you see the pump, don't go too fast or you'll miss it! If you blow the tank or run out of fuel you will need to push to pump by tapping fire! Load/Save: Play the disk version which saves your best times - If you use one of the emulators set the disk as Read/Write. If, like me, you have a disk with previous times saved load in an 'opposing field from disk' by pressing Select (F3). Looking foward to seeing your driving names Download: atarionline.pl v1 ATR looks good and has default scores, atarimania has ATR's of activision's US ver & UK ver. Manual: on archive.org Round NOW finishes: Sun16th Jan 10PM GMT we can extend this a little if needed. EVERYONE WELCOME TO PLAY Ger READY to Push to Pump! 8BIT 1337
This was one of my favourites as a teenager, especially the LA to NY run. Love the way the cities come in to view as you get closer (and love the small touches like the St Louis arch and the WTC) Also one of my favourites as a teenager was Cannonball Run - so it was natural to use "Captain Chaos" as my name on the disk. Until FujiNet I never bothered saving but will now! LA to NY: 18:54 (1st) SEA to MIA: 23:55 (beaten below) SF to WAS: 24:08 (beaten below) US Tour: 89:14 (beaten below) What's crazy about my route is that my 11728 one was almost identical to DieMON's other than I did his city '4' on my way down (so it was my '13' if you will). Crazy that one small change cost me 1000 miles! Even crazier is that I found an even *longer* route but managed to beat my time from before LOL Edited January 3, 2022 by 8BIT 1337
carlsson
Seattle to Miami: 38:09 (thus outside of the top 10) On first attempt, I simply followed the path blindly and ended up in New York, going north to Portland and back to New York a couple of times before I realized that you get to select which road to take next. It resulted in that I arrived in Miami after 60 hours. On second attempt, I tried more carefully to choose what I thought was the fastest path but clearly I was far behind the top results, which makes 8BIT 1337's score of 23:55 even more impressive.

8BIT 1337
So I decided I'd try to find my original disk to see if I had saved scores and bingo! Field 8 had a bunch of scores for all races but U.S. Tour (easily the most for LA to NY, which is what I remembered) I tried to back this up to my PC using "Drive copy" but when I try to load the file into Altirra it freezes, which makes me think it didn't copy properly. If anyone has advice on how to back this up let me know, as I'd love to 'switch' over to this copy to start using it through FujiNet (although I suppose I could just bite the bullet and use my 1050 ) EDIT: I've tried MyCopyR and CopyMate 4.4 and nothing has worked. There are simply a chunk of sectors that can't be read. I don't want to hijack this thread so if you have suggestions or questions please PM me. 8BIT 1337
SF to WAS: 20:38 (1st) Realized that the first time I did this I mistakenly went to NY first. This time I made sure to go the quicker route. Edited January 3, 2022 by 8BIT 1337
carlsson
So should we list the default times in order for everyone to calculate their position on the top list, or do we simply compete with eachother? I mean there is a difference between if three people end up in #1 on a given route and each are awarded 10 pseudopoints which are later combined to yield HSC points, than if all HSC participants are ranked and pseudopoints are awarded per route regardless of how you scored against fixed results. 8BIT 1337
Improvement: SEA to MIA: 22:58 (2nd) FYI: I tried loading game using FujiNet, then loading a field from real disk drive, then swapping back to FujiNet after and I got an I/O error. Which is a bummer. Edited January 3, 2022 by 8BIT 1337
8BIT 1337
Improvement: US Tour: 76:27 (2nd) As I said before, it's amazing that I only did one city in a different order than my first run of this and yet it's 1000 miles shorter.

Yeah for whatever reason (probably lack of space for coding) the nav seems to always want to take you NE. That's how I messed up my first SF to WAS run and ended up in NY. For SEA to MIA you definitely want to go to to Salt Lake first and then Denver. It's 50miles shorter than going the default way through Billings.
+therealbountybob
Some nice posts already Various replies: Tables based on times (post distances too) - doesn't matter if you play a saved field from disk. Not sure if you fail to make the scoreboard but finish if you can still see your time? If not pause it at the end of your go and grab it if possible. Disk is copy protected (from memory) could ask on main forum re technical stuff Read first post for hints, most common mistake is not selecting your next stop before setting off - diagonals allow other cities to be selected on the map. Shorter routes may not be quicker! Try and develop yor own routes. Want to see those drivin' names so let's get creative, I'm hitting the road later

8BIT 1337
Another score improvement. SEA to MIA: 22:35 (1st) Anybody notice other numbers appearing in the MPH column? When you switch races it pops up first and then is replaced by MPH. Thought maybe it was KMs but didn't seem to convert properly unless I did something wrong

roadrunner
GACCRR review --- Decent effort User Rating: 6 | The Great American Cross-Country Road Race A800 By croromano | Review Date: August 14, 2020 This game puts you in the position of a driver of a high-performance car participating, as the name implies, in races between U.S. cities. Noteworthy features of the game include a multitude of weather and road conditions (fog, snow, road construction), day/night changes (complete with smooth twilight transitions) and the ability to plan individual route to beat competition to the destination. Additional features, that this game was among the first to boast, are sequential manual transmission, refuelling, traffic and police pursuits. The graphical presentation is pseudo-3D perspective with behind the car view.

I can understand, though. At first glance, TGACCRR seems like it's just a clone of Enduro from the 2600. Activision was infamous for their low-effort early 8-bit ports that basically duplicated the 2600 versions with (slight) graphical and sound improvements. (See Kaboom, Megamania, Pitfall, etc.) But this one is different. If someone is expecting a pick-up-and-play title like Enduro, they're going to be really surprised to find out that there is some strategy and technique involved. You really can't play TGACCRR without learning how it works first.

I'd really encourace you all to have a saveable score disk too, always amusing to find yourself stuck behind "Little Dick Mick". I've kept with the Bob theme so here's my first one:
