+Cafeman
I hope somebody can offer a suggestion here. I just got my new PC (PIII 1Ghz running Windows ME). When I usethe VSS 5200 emulator that I got from Dan Boris' site, there is a constant annoying low-pitched hum sound generated in addition to the game sounds; so annoying I've started to use the -nosound option. I have a brand new soundblaster Live! and Altec Lansing speakers w/subwoofer. Funny, on my old 486 100Mhz w/a soundblaster, and Windows 95, it worked fine; on my pIII w/Windows NT it didn't make any sounds, but on this one, that annoying scratchy hum sound. Dan, is there anyway to upgrade VSS? Or is the problem my sound card settings? Or is there some way to tell what the problem is? Note that all other audio works fine, so I suspect it is a compatibility prob between VSS and sBLive! ... DEBRO
I don't have an answer to your problem but how about using another emulator. I think you can use an 8-bit computer emulator and just supply it with the 5200 BIOS. +Cafeman
if it works, that's what I'll do. I downloaded MESS at home... but I couldn't get it to work with 5200 stuff. It kept saying I didn't have a ROM. I copied a 5200 .bin file into the 5200 roms folder, but it still didn't work. I'll mess with MESS again soon! Marmaduke
The real issue is that emulators are getting outdated, most of them are written for DOS and more contemporary operating systems like windows direct x and Linux are waiting to be throuly explored. What i would do is to wait. Dan Boris emulators kick searious ass but they are outdated and thats ok because is his (Dan´s) option. We need new emulation heroes since Sardu, Dan Boris, and the likes have grown up and acquired new issues far more important than emulation. You can go to The Twisted Page this fellow has a very kick ass emulator for the Atari computers wich also happens to run the Atari 5200 and on a windows platform. +Cafeman
Just to add a possible solution to the mystery ... I think the scratchy bassy sound is caused by using the -limit option, which all new PC owners must use with the VSS DOS emulator. When I forgot to type this option, I noticed the sound was okay. I still never got any other 5200 emulators to work for some reason ...
