Just surviving means learning to avoid difficult terrain when you can and especially when within range of the turrets. You also have to learn to avoid approaching the turrets at right or diagonal angles and slipping into those angles right after their shot misses to get your own shot in. Then there's the matter of getting the code letters. It's not hard to get all three in the early levels... later you'll probably just want to get two (or even one!) and guess what you don't know as quickly as possible.
