I know that this is considered a classic, but I think it's one of those that you had to have been there at the time to really appreciate it. There's something about the game that is strangely absorbing for sure , but even by the standards of a 2600 game, there isn't really much to the gameplay. Thinking about this season, many of the games have kept me coming back for more until the time ran out. And while it's perhaps unfair to compare this to late release titles like Klax or Road Runner, I don't think it will hold my attention through the week in a way that similar aged titles like Space Invaders and Asteroids did.

Don't get me wrong, I can see why it made such waves at launch. It was genuinely original in a lot of ways, and like I say, strangely absorbing in short bursts. But personally, I don't think it's held up over time as well as some of my favourites from the period have.

Anyway, I will shut up now and post a score ?

Oh, and given I'm matched against @kermit73 , I think it's fair to say I won't be winning any bonus points this week ???

Game 6 is my favorite variation of Yars', and I like the challenge of just having one life.  Usually I don't worry about dying in this game since accumulating extra lives is not too difficult, especially as the game progresses.  I will be taking a much more conservative and less risky approach this week.

This is the first time I think I’ve sat down and read the instructions and played seriously, and I like it a lot! The bonus points for eating a cell is awesome and adds a lot to the strategy. Ultimate Yar’s is a great variation. I’ve done myself in by accidentally firing my zorlon into myself. (Fun fact: my phone autocorrects zorlon as “sirloin”.) The 1 life challenge is a great idea.

2nd Fun Fact: The instruction manual includes this gem of a hint-

Anyone else getting this weird glitch running down the middle of their screen? ??

I recall as a kid having countless games end prematurely because of this mean streak.  If only I understood the full meaning of this hint at the time...

Awright, all that practice paid off! Here is 6aa, 70644, 1 life:

Just to make sure the difficulty switches were working right, I tried it on 6bb too. Maybe I was just thrown off by all of the fast qotile play, but it actually seemed harder - what she lost in speed she seemed to gain in accuracy. The destroyer missile isn’t a major threat the way I play.

Do you get extra points for shooting the swirl mid flight? I am addicted to getting it that way, but maybe that’s not a good idea for this challenge…

I don’t shoot the trons at all, I just eat them. Does the tron counter reset after each level or only when you die? How many trons are there per level?

Yes.  Hitting the swirl in flight is 6000 points (plus a bonus life), compared to 2000 if you when hitting it in place or 1000 points before it's turned into a swirl.

While this is a more fun way to play the game, it's also more risky.  With just a single life, I'm waiting until I hit 150k, when the shield turns grey and the swirl turns into a guided missile to start taking them out mid-air.  When reaching this point, it's much easier to pick off the swirls since their path is predictable and can be steered.  For me, the most challenging part of the game is when the shield is blue between 70k and 150k.

The tron counter only resets when you die, so you keep them from one level to the next.  If you can make it to 230k (when the shield turns pink), you can really start racking up the points quickly since the swirls come frequently and can be steered to be easily taken out in flight.

Shooting while eating the shield is the more efficient way to score points and clear a path to take a shot at the quotile. Yar's movement can be a little erratic and unpredictable when eating the shield which is particularly dangerous when the missile is tracking you quickly and is nearby.  Another way to accumulate trons is to touch the Quotile before it turns into a swirl.  If the shield is gone, I often make a point to do this once immediately after a swirl has fired.

My best single life score so far is just under 300k.  I'll get a score with a photo posted sometime before the end of this weekend.
