Aardvark's Wild modes require a slightly different strategy than the normal modes. Usually you use the most central gaps and work top to down. But due to the rock blocks, the ant hill has become a bit like a maze. That means, the game becomes less methodical. You will often find yourself in a situation where you have to move the tongue through gaps close to the borders. This is risky, because there is only little time for retreat. I found that taking too many risks will lead to bad results. Be careful, but still be fast. Also the enemies have been randomized and also changed behavior a bit.

My first score:

Hey 2600 High Score Club members!  I am honored that RAPTOR is part of the homebrew games and I look forward to seeing all of the great scores.  I have attached the full game manual and I encourage everyone to read it in its entirety to grasp the game's more subtle elements.  If there is anything that needs more explanation or clarification, post a question in this forum and I will be more than happy to answer it.

I am planning to distribute patches to anyone scoring 1000+ points (a Raptor ranking).  So, if you qualify and and are interested in getting a patch, just send me (@Armscar Coder) a screenshot via an AtariAge PM with to whom and where the patch should be sent.  Any screenshots posted in this forum will also qualify as evidence of obtaining the patch level score threshold.  The patch has not yet been designed and it will most likely be this summer until I start shipping them.

As far as game tips go, here is what I'll start off with:

- Don't overheat the laser.

- Try to save your bombs for the bonus points.

- Don't overheat the laser.

- Avoid the sky sweeper.

- Don't overheat the laser.

- Firing the laser with medium long bursts in a strafing pattern works best for me.  I usually start firing the laser just before the cross hairs get to the enemy and then sweep across it.

- Don't overheat the laser.

I want to also comment that I am honored that RAPTOR is being featured with Aardvark and Stratovox 2600.  Both of these are great games.  I was playing a little Stratovox last night and other than realizing how horrible I am at this type of shooter, it was a blast and appears to have a lot of replay ability.  I must say that Aardvark is super impressive.  When I first discovered the Atari homebrew scene and was starting to program, Aardvark was new and very intimidating.  Thomas Jentzsch, one of the developers for Aardvark, has delivered many impressive games over the years (including the award winning Robot City) and in my opinion is on the Mt. Rushmore of 2600 Homebrew development.  The HSC is in for a treat the next few weeks.

Some first goes on Raptor and Aardvark. What can I say about Aardvark, it's absolutely stunning. Being a 32k ROM, it would only have been remotely feasible as a mainstream release right at the end of the 2600s life, but I have to say that if I'd played this in 1990 ish, I would have bought it . . . . .even though my main machine was an Amiga by then. In fact, in an alternate world where this came out in 1990 ish as a commercial release, it might have even prompted me to buy a 2600 if i didn't have one already (they were typically selling in the UK for £30 ish by then) just so I could play this game. It's that good. And yes, I know there was effectively a C64 version (a machine I owned back then) of it too , but this is much better.

And @Armscar Coder , top work. I know you say you're "honoured" to be included in the HSC home brew games, but Raptor is a cracking game that fully deserves inclusion. As a 4k ROM, I think the obvious timepoint for  comparison with commercial releases is 1981-2 ish. And IMHO, what you've done compares well to all but the best releases in that time period. In an alternative world where this was a commercial release in the system's main lifespan, I'd certainly been very happy if Santa put this under my tree at Christmas 1982 ? .

Anyway, I'll stop waffling on now and post some (not very impressive) scores. I'm glad I've got three weeks to play these, and that's before I even start on Stratovox!.

RAPTOR!!!

Finally!!!
I might join you Guys on this one, I like earning patches!!!

:)

@Jasonhrb - can't remember if you were around a couple seasons ago, when Doggone It! was a game we played-

That's the best homebrew ever made. Just my opinion, but it IS my opinion.

Armscar is just too humble for his own good, is all, haha!

(Tho I believe his love for his fellow programmers!).

Tickled about this one. Big smile. Can't wait to give it a go!!!

*Edit*

Just looked at the manual for RAPTOR.

What a piece of work. Wow. WOW.

It's late so I didn't have much time to stretch.  Thankfully I didn't pull any muscles.

First efforts are as follows:

Aardvark: 21,240 (Nice port, just wish you could speed up the arrival of Oscar at the beginning.)

Stratovox: 4,850 (I need more practice.)

RAPTOR: 330 (Clever concept.  The manual helped me.)

Vocelli:

Stratovox:  22450

This game gets crazy once 2 waves come at you at once!  Great Game!

RAPTOR: 723

The game has so many layers of strategy. Requires you to not only watch the bottom screen... but the top screen to. That is something that really makes this game great!
