PacManPlus
I did a hack of the graphics/colors to see how close we can come to Pac-Man Plus on the 2600. Now the only things it's missing are: 1) Turning the ghosts blue by eating the fruit (and scoring double points when you eat them) 2) Making the maze/dots disappear somtimes when you eat an energizer 3) Sometimes making one of the monsters not turn blue when you eat an energizer, and 4) Speeding up the whole thing Can anyone help? P.S. - sorry for the bad conversion of the graphics - I'm no artist! enjoy! pacplus.zip
Atari 800 fan
It is a good Idea- For a system that is over 20 years old. Hey, nobody's perfect, but you are off to a great start.
PacManPlus
Thank you - and Welcome to AtariAge!!!! I've been wondering how hard it would be to just call the subroutine to turn the monsters blue once the fruit is eaten (assuming it's a subroutine) Also, I would need a random function to make the maze color transparent when an energizer is eaten... Unless I am missing something, I don't think it would be that hard. I just have to try and figure out the disassembly of Ms.PacMan. I have 'raindog' to thank for documenting some of the code for it. Anyway, thanks for the reply
Breakpack
Dude THAT IS MAJOR AWESOME!Man if you get the fruit and power pellet effects programmed,Id buy one on cart. That rocks!!
PacManPlus
Thanks, man I was thinking about the 'disappearing maze/dots' thing, and most likely if we just change the color to the background, that would create the effect needed... ATARI TROLL
I too, like the graphics. Has a nice start up screen with the color. I like the ghosts graphics once you eat a power pellot. Nice Job
NE146
I only checked this out now even though I read this thread a while ago. I think you really should post up screenshots to get people the immediate idea of this hack I dig it
MegaManFan
The closer we get to Pac Plus the better

Breakpack
In Pac-Plus ,the ghosts seem slighly different graphically...I dunno ,kinda like the eyes were a little deeper into the ghosts.I made the eyes lower so tell me what ya think.... pacpluseyes.zip
PacManPlus
@Breakpack: In PacManPlus (the arcade version), the monster's eyes are one pixel closer together when looking left or right, and they are one pixel lower when looking up (I wonder why?) I'll have to check your version out to see what you did Here are some screen shots... One of the blue monsters, and one of the 'Pancake' Level:
Breakpack
All I did was move them 1 pixel set down from their original spot (and restored the complete eyes, like the PMA/Ms Pac versions)nothing really major
Breakpack
Ok I went too low with the eyes.opps so I think I got it now......I pixel set lower than the original Ms.Pac and Pac Arcade.PacManPlus, how do you hack the color and playfield efects and stuff....figured Id get into this too,if I can figure out this stuff pacpluseyes2.zip
sku_u
I think you did a good job. I'd like to see where you go with this
PacManPlus
Thanks Sku_u BTW I saw the post in the 2600 thread about the WIP of PacManPlus - that was very nice of you Breakpack I am still working on trying to figure this stuff out by myself, I have disassembled the rom (thanks to Distella, and breaking the program into 2 - 4K parts), and have mapped out the graphics section of it. I might need a little help trying to figure out where certain routines are, so any help is appreciated I have included how far I got here (not the binary, looking at the source) - NOTE that I started with MsPacMan, not the hack. Regarding the colors, Rob Kudla has documented where the colors are in the file - just download his binary, and look for the .txt file in there - it explains everything. http://www.kudla.org/raindog/pac26.html mspacs.zip
Breakpack
Im looking at the binary files, but Im no programmer ... Ill try my best to study this (its all foreign to me )maybe I can get something goin'
Nukey Shay
Nono...the text file in the zip (from the link, not the attachment) has descriptions of what was changed when creating A Better PacMan. For example, the SHOWGFX locations for the playfield color table is at 1d16, ghost colors are at 0b82, etc. The zipfile is here: http://www.kudla.org/raindog/pac26.zip
PacManPlus
That was what I meant (I must have said it wrong - I'm sorry) Rob Kudla also mentions where the colors are in the rom, and BreakPack was asking how I hacked the colors.
