Humblejack
Here is an article about a video game controller modification for Xbox. Maybe one of the smart AA members here could do the same for Intellivision. https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/a-modder-has-turned-a-fisher-price-toy-controller-into-a-working-xbox-controller/?utm_source=join1440&utm_medium=email&utm_placement=newsletter Edited May 5, 2022 by Humblejack Added Pic
Rickster8
There seems to be many Intellivision controller modifications possible, but for some reason nobody wants to do them any-more? Is there a reason for this? Why is anything Intellivision related seemingly TABOO these days? ?♂️
+fdr4prez
It isn't taboo. It is just difficult. The controller connector does not have a power pin and that is why on the video you saw him connecting a wallwart. And the pin out for the controllers is a bit complex, too. For example, to go NE, it is not simply a combo of the north pin and the east pin. You need to also activate a third pin at the same time. To map the 16 directions using a thumbstick mapped correctly to the db9 connector will require a microcontroller, but again, there is no power pin available to power it. That is why the one I am hacking together will require a wallwart - I don't think I'll make it battery powered, but I may
mr_me
https://arcarc.xmission.com/Web Archives/Deathskull (May-2006)/games/tech/intvsticky.html The adapter in the video is based on the schematic at this link.
+grips03
Its time, losing money, and materials related. When I made the adapters it would take around 5 hours per unit, I would take a loss on each sold, then return or repairs on top of that. The return and repairs were not my fault, but I took the return and did the repair, but that only costs more time and money. Then the supply of high quality db9 cables dried up and I had to use the db9 cables from console5.com or retrobit (China) and they were not so good. I would end up junking a ton of cables as they would not work.

So, thanks for doing these. If you come to PRGE I'll buy you dinner as well.

I'm sure a bunch of us here would still gladly buy them.... ? Edit: Just read the part about the db9 cables shortage. I guess if the good ones are no longer available then the whole project just fails.... Edited May 11, 2022 by Rickster8 Wording
+grips03
Problem is no one wants to buy a $200 adapter and I can't blame them I did finally find a source of high quality db9 cables, but the sides need to be trimmed to fit into Intv2 console. They work without cuts on Sears.
larryvgs
I saw the video @Rickster8 posted at the start of this thread when it came out, and had been waiting for an adapter also so I could use modern controllers on an Intellivision. But I soon saw that it wasn't coming. But then I learned about the Intellivision emulator jzIntv, and then about jenergy's jzIntvImGui which simplies the process so you can use modern controllers on a PC with kbdhackfile configs you set up. Then, after I learned that jenergy's program worked on Android, I transferred it to a Fire TV stick, transferred the roms over, created a bunch of configs to work with various Bluetooth controllers and long story short... Now I'm playing over 150 Intellivision games (both orgiinal and homebrew) on my 55' Toshiba big screen using a Xbox Core wireless controller, a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, and an 8BitDo Pro 2 controller, all of which work great. And the picture is better than what you get with the Intellivision console's RF output. Anyway, just so you know, there is another option... 1

I accept it'd be pricier.

larryvgs
As long as you have the XBox One Model 1708 with Bluetooth it will work. The triggers on an XBox controller unfortunately will not work, but on the third party PowerX Moga XP5-X they do work, and you can get one new currently at Amazon for $33 or "renewed" for a little over $28. I got a "renewed" one when it was only $20 and it works great. One of the kbdhackfile configs I created for Tron Deadly Discs lets me use the A,B,X and Y buttons to fire up,down, left and right, and RB,LB,RT and LT to fire diagonally. Happy to share the configs if you decide to try jzIntvImGui on a Fire TV which I explain how to set up elsewhere in these forums. I'm still on the list (#100) to get the new Intellivision controllers when they get to me.

Jenergy's jzIntvImGui on github.com seems to not include the .apk file for installing it on Android. Am I missing something?
