So much for easing into winter here in the Houston Texas area.  The forecast calls for a low temperature of 16F. I spent the afternoon chasing two sheets down the street because I had not properly weighted them down. (The sheets are meant to protect a few tender plants that probably won't survive the cold). Hopefully, everyone affected by this extreme weather is staying safe and warm.

got down to 16f (-8c) here near New Braunfels,TX last night with 20 mph winds. we have a heat pump with heat strips and it just stopped for the 1st time since late last night. ugh. and all our plants are dead. sheets blew off last night a like-heck I was going out in that to recover them.

Remember that I am located at 51°N, the same latitude as Calgary.

Haha... and meanwhile in Calgary it's -19C (-2F) right now, expected to hit -30C (-22F) tonight.

But, this is also predicted to be the worst day of our cold snap, we're due to get back to a more normal and balmy -5C (23F) by Sunday.

The swings here are crazy, never before lived in a place that would regularly swing the mercury 40 degrees in two days. ;)

I had my complete outdoor heat pump unit replaced last spring. Then 2 months later the blower motor in the attic went out. And all this happened after the condenser above the kitchen in the attic leaked all though the kitchen ceiling..

Yes..it's been fun. Sorry to hear about that heat pump... switch to individual wall heaters for now.

A section of our neighborhood lost power at 9:30am today and it was restored 7 hours later.  Fortunately, the sun was out and the inside temps never dropped below 55. Muscle memory had me trying to turn on lights in the darker rooms.  We used one of my APC1500s for powering the internet, phones, and an LED lamp.

We were fortunate as it looks like the East and Northeast US are not faring as well right now.  :(   https://poweroutage.us/

you are warmer than here in S.central Tx. at high 38F (3.3C). I never considered Germany a good place for a warm Winter vacation but...

Honestly, I'd rather have 10 degrees less and some snow, as it should be typical for winter time. Don't expect that at 10°C you have some mild sunny day ... instead, it's often raining long with overcast skies, and it's getting dark around 16:30 just because of the thick clouds. While in the States, the winters are becoming more extreme, in central Europe we observe the opposite. Snow in December has become rare, and in some years we had only a couple of days below zero (freezing) in the whole winter.

When I was in Hetta (where I shot that aurora picture in the other thread), we started at about -19°C (-2°F) on the first day, then continued with -10°C (+14°F) for some more days, and ended with -5°C (+23°F). Mind that this is at 68°N, that is, above the polar circle (like the Alaskan north coast). The differences are interesting.

Summer not found either ...

In the first half of July, temperatures rose until we had almost tropical nights (July 10), but in the second half we have some occasional sunny interruptions of rainy weather. Typically, August is the warmest month here, so let's see what we get.

I call this skin-friendly summer weather (hello to all with skin type 1).

(Conversions: 20°C = 68°F, 30°C = 86°F, 40°C = 104°F; temperatures sampled with my self-built ESP32 sensor node).

Does that mean almost translucent? ;)

Judging by your numbers, The mid-west (Minnesota) has been very similar. The humidity has been going up - probably due to corn coming in.

Its just been really dry this year. It may be contributing to the awful allergies this season.

Today, I was testing out my personal backyard spot for the solar moon event thingy tomorrow.

It will be hitting me around 3:19pm EST with 99% coverage.

Today, it was perfect with 13c and not a single cloud, sadly for the 2 million plus visitors here sleeping in the hotels and Airbnb tonight for the big event, the weather person is predicting cloudy sky with temperature being only 9c.

Either way tomorrow, I will take a picture, hopefully my camera not my eyes will capture something if the clouds are partially gone by the afternoon.

I was pleasantly surprised down here in Dallas. Sky got progressively cloudier until about ten minutes before the main event, when it suddenly cleared up.

That said, as frustrating as it was not knowing in advance, "partly sunny" was a hilarious forecast for a solar eclipse.

This is the best it got here, with 99% coverage for about 2 minutes the streetlights came on and the bottom part of the cloudy sky was all dark. And then about 10 minutes after the event all the clouds disappeared and now you can get a sunburn there so much sun out.

We had cloud cover and 95% eclipse coverage.  Shortly after the darkest period the winds picked up, loud thunder, lightning, and rain followed.  Then we had a tornado watch and tornado warning: the latter was not in our immediate vicinity.  It was all quite ominous but not Independence-Day-alien-ship-emerges-from-the-sky ominous :)
