Muzz73
Hello all! I've been missing from the forums here for several years, surely missed out on a lot of nifty happenings and have a lot of catching up to do. Meanwhile... I recently purchased a 130XE and figured that one of the first things I should do would be to pop it open. If it had Micron RAM chips, those would get replaced immediately. When I opened it up, I saw what appear to be Hynix RAM chips. Should I be worried? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance! Beeblebrox
@Muzz73should be OK. ? If any run hot to the touch then be concerned. You ran self test memory test yet? All OK? Am assuming you have powered it on btw? What power supply have you got incidentally? Edited June 14, 2022 by Beeblebrox
Rybags
They still exist in the modern day and are a major player. Should be fine IMO.
Muzz73
I haven't powered it on yet, to be honest. It's a NOS unit that I purchased from B&C Computervisions (I'm in NTSC land and wanted a PAL machine to play with) and I'm sure that it works just fine. I just know what a pain that Micron RAM can be, so I was thinking that if the machine had it on the board, I would just replace them on general principle. As far as I can remember, I haven't run across Hynix RAM in any of my Ataris before. While I haven't heard anything bad about them, I figured that I should ask. I'll leave the RAM alone then. As power supplies go, I have a rebuildable one that I got new from Best Electronics years ago for my 800XL. I also have an old 450w Mini ITX PSU that I have ordered a breakout board and 7-pin DIN cable for, just to try it... ?
Beeblebrox
@Muzz73 Cool. Yeah just be careful with the PSU. I heard of a user who accidentally plugged in a non Atari PSU for a C64 and fried various chips. Also even some US sold Atari PSUs can be damaging (the infamous Atari Ingot PSU for example). Ingot: As for the Atari scene - it's a great time to come back to it. You will see there are a load of new games and ports over the years, (last year was a good one with the likes of the amazing Prince of Persia port, and games like Flob, Gacek, Final Assault(FPS), Albert, The last Squadron and others to name a few). Also check out Atariblast! sometime from around 5-6 years ago. We have works in progress (WIP) the likes of L'abbaye des morts and Giana sisters also. Hardware wise we have many carts, devices and upgrades. (U1MB, SIDE3, AVG cart, SIO2PC, SIO2SD, SDrive max, Fujiinet). The excellent SNACK adapter for SNES controllers is defo worth checking out (see my signature for a link). Also check out Rastaconverter (see link in my signature also). I'd also recommend checking out the pinned topic at the top of the forum for returning atarians and newbies. Also if you have any questions - in the first instance I recommend you search the forum with the search function, as 99% of the time the question and been asked and answered - usually many times. Huge wealth of knowledge here on AA. I have many A8s with U1MB installed and use the SIDE3 cart, (latter has a new firmware in the pipeline from it's creator with some great new functionality). Another very popular cart you'll read about is AVG. The pinned aforementioned topic outlines lots of info about them.
Muzz73
Wow! That's a whole lot of Atari goodness! I will be sure to check them all out. ? No ingots here... I made sure of that! ? I sometimes wish I had an ingot laying around so I could hollow it out and put modern innards into it... ? Many thanks!
