nadir
I've got a couple games that support online multiplayer. However, if I try to select that option they both say that it's disabled in the system and I need to turn it on. If I go into the system settings, multiplayer is listed as enabled and available... Thoughts on what else might cause this?
Austin
I believe there are multiple privacy settings you have to adjust in order to be able to play online. It's a little convoluted and more than just setting a single switch to "on". I don't recall exactly where these options are.
Leonard Smith
You do have an active Xbox Live Gold subscription, yes?

Austin
I guess that answers it then. Xbox Live Gold is a paid service and is required to play online in the Xbox ecosystem. Game Pass Ultimate also includes the Gold service. 1

You have to subscribe to Xbox Live (costs money) to play online. I think some free-to-play games like Fortnite might sidestep this requirement. They also give you a few games for free each month which you can play so long as you keep up your subscription. https://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/gold#gameswithgold Xbox Live cards go on sale a lot if you want to save a few bucks. https://www.techradar.com/news/xbox-live-gold-deals Also consider Game Pass, which includes Xbox Live but lets you download a lot of different games, including new releases, and stream games too. It's worth the money if you like to try a lot of new things each month. 1
nadir
Thank you! I really don't have any interest in playing more than the handful of games I already have. I really only got the system for the new MS Flight Simulator and $10/mo is way too much just to play multiplayer. I guess I'll just stick to single player! You used to be able to find annual passes around $50 now and again. I haven't checked in awhile if they still come available though.
