It would seem that Jaru, Nargo and Churglik (Scanning department), Tegra (Navigation department), possibly Sheema (Engineering department) and Bru (Repair department) may be your female options, though I'll admit I'm not fully trained in recognizing alien females, or even if alien lifeforms are divided into he-beings and she-beings. The OP said "games where a major/main playable character is female" so yeah I think they count, though as you said it's hard to tell with alien creatures! It's interesting that I came to the same conclusion when I looked at the screenshots and I wonder if the game creators did intend for people to perceive those characters to be "female". Especially Bru who appears to have breasts (though oddly enough not in the PC version!) but then again who's to say that males of their species don't have breasts? pacman000
Surprised no one mentioned this: Ghost Manor https://atariage.com/software_page.php?SoftwareLabelID=207 Players can choose to play as a boy or girl. (Wish more games had this feature.) Has anyone mentioned Super Mario Bros 2 yet? That gave you the option of playing as Princess Peach. And there have been quite a few Barbie games. Most get poor reviews, but I remember some from the late 90's that were kinda neat.
Tanooki
Look I know it's not retro, but I have to throw this out there as it's one of those rarer SOTN style games I don't think are just boring me-too crap, and you play as a lady start to end. famicommander
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Xbox) is one of the better 3D beat 'em ups of its era. It has a good combat system with a bunch of combinations, power ups, destructible environments you can turn into weapons (like breaking a wooden chair or mop to make stakes to kill vampires), etc. Most of the cast from the show returns to voice their characters too. Also some environmental puzzles and light platforming. There was a sequel called Chaos Bleeds (also on PS2 and Gamecube) but it was developed by a different studio and the combat and level design took a step backwards. Not awful, but not nearly as good.
