Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration announced

Atariboy

Recommended Posts

Looks like we have a new classic compilation on the way.

Not just the same old stuff this time around. Even includes several Atari Jaguar games like Tempest 2000.

Edit: Looks like we also have a thread going about this in the VCS sub forum.

It's always 'that' half of atari, isn't it?

Come on, Time Warner--maybe get some hipster indie shop to give us something new from the Atari Games half for the 50th.

I mean, Hydra was basically a stripped down version of Shine Runner, with a mullet and synth drums.

Or are you guys being slick and counting 2024 as the 50th? -(nah, they probably just forgot they own it...)

Xbox One is one of the announced platforms. No Series specific version though, even though there will be PS4 and PS5 specific versions.

I hope this has USB mouse support. Would go a long ways towards making some iconic classics like Super Breakout actually able to be enjoyed on modern consoles. I believe the big three all support keyboard/mouse these days, so no excuse not to other than laziness.

The Atari Games catalog is owned by the videogame division of Warner Brothers, after buying most of Midway's IP when they went belly up back a few years ago. I'd be surprised to see any of that here, but you never know. Very little of the arcade lineup has been shown in the announcement trailer, so we really don't know yet (I only recall seeing Major Havoc in the trailer).

I'm hoping that they at least licensed Battlezone from Rebellion.

I'll probably get it, any word of a release date or season?

Also, noticed they are doing the whole 'atari made everything! Nothing existed before us!' self hyped puke. Yes OK, its sort of true when it comes to the consumerisation of video games, but it's also mostly false as well in it being the only option, the first, or the only one that was regarded as a success.

(oh and the obvious point that their first game pong was a rip from someone else's game that was about to be released and got sued for).

Presumably.

We know that they've created a new game with that name and the brief appearance in that trailer where they're highlighting the new games is extremely reminiscent of the original three games, so it seems extremely likely that's Swordquest: Airworld.

While a nice touch to finally bring that franchise to a close after 40 years, I hope it manages to not be a dud like the originals. The only part of the original three games that I appreciate is the fancy title screen from Earthworld. They're not complete disasters and the original premise was cool with the contest and the included comic, but for actually playing in 2022, I doubt many 2600 fans revisit these very often.

vctr sctr sounds really interesting:

Two of these, Haunted House and Yars' Revenge Reimagined, were announced as straightforward modern-graphic versions of their Atari 2600 counterparts, and while we trust Digital Eclipse's track record, we have yet to see exactly how these two games have been rebuilt, or whether they lean on classic pixel designs or new 3D assets. Two additional games sound like souped-up, modern remixes of their original counterparts: Quadratank (a four-player touch-up of the 2600's Tank) and Neo Breakout (which combines Breakout and Pong as a two-player versus game).

The last two reimagined games in the collection are the most intriguing. Vctr Sctr will combine "gameplay from a variety of vector arcade classics" into a newly remixed experience. It's unclear whether this new game will break classics up into mini-games or smush them together into a new game experience, but either way, the original Atari arcade library was rich with vector-driven games to choose from. Additionally, Swordquest: Airworld is a new sequel to the 2600's three-part Swordquest series.

What?!?  No Casino?  A damn shame.

In all seriousness, a pretty good list.  However, apart from the Jag stuff, nothing really mind blowing imo.  Still, it is a nice enough list that has been put together.  Hopefully they will create a Volume 2 or 3 somewhere down the line with stuff for the ST included.

Oh, hey, I am not saying it is not worthwhile.  I do believe it is.  However, I just doesn't blow my knickers away.  But, hey, if you are all about it that is all good.  Totally fine by me.  I hope you enjoy it once it is released.

It's Sprint 8 that I'll be firing up first. I was very pleased to see that one here. I wish they had done a few more new 70's games, but after expecting no new additions from that era, I'll happily accept that and the original Breakout. If I had my way though we'd also have one of the Tank games, Jet Fighter, Video Pinball, and Night Driver to go alongside those two and the usual suspects like Pong and Asteroids.

Hopefully they stole the steering setup that Code Mystics dreamed up for the overhead racers in the Flashback line. It was very clever and went a long ways towards making Indy 500, Sprint 2, Fire Truck, Super Bug, and Monte Carlo playable and fun on their collections.

The basic steer left and right system with the analog stick or d-pad to turn an invisible 360 degree free-spinning wheel just doesn't work well enough in other compilations. I can literally go at least 8 races into Super Sprint for instance on a real cabinet before I have to start to concentrate. Yet on something like Midway Arcade Origins, I have my work cut out for me by race 3 simply because I'm struggling to deliver my inputs to the emulator.

That's a consequence of no online leaderboards for the emulated games. For whatever reason Digital Eclipse has taken the unfortunate move to not to make the effort to do things like isolate the scoring registers and so on to allow them to be monitored for external leaderboards.

Since that same sort of work is also what enables the tying of achievements/trophies to accomplishing different goals in these emulated games, it's not surprising to see that they're instead mostly connected to the newly coded reimagined games. At least the Jaguar category has three goals, which is the platform that they're pushing the most with this collection and by extension probably put the most effort into.

I'm a sucker for these collections and I played the heck out of Flashback Classics.  It's going to have to wait, though, because Pokemon Scarlet/Violet comes out the week after and I'm *also* a sucker for these games, too, lol.

Hopefully I'll pick up Atari 50 in a couple of weeks. :)
