I know on Zaxxon 3D (at the title screen), if you press the Pause button on the console you should see a menu that lets you choose between 2D and 3D (and a control option).

Missile Defense, there's a ROM hack that puts the backgrounds into 2D, but not the missiles.

Zaxxon 3-D is the only other SMS 3-D game I have right now, and it’s not kind to me. Whether in 2 dimensions or 3, I can’t seem to get a good handle on it. I even have the fancy dancy control stick, which I like for this game despite my apparent lack of depth perception.

 

No screen shot, as I hit reset to switch modes and thought I’d beat that score 🙄

It’s interesting that the instruction manual doesn’t mention the 2-D mode, or inverse controls for that matter.

Oh neat, in both of the SMS emulators for Wii, it automatically renders the games in a 2D mode. It screws with the aiming in Missile Defense a little bit, but once you learn to adjust, it's not so bad.

 

101900 is probably going to be my final score.

I got to the "you're halfway through!" mission and things suddenly got way too fast for me. I don't think I'm getting much further without cheating.

43650 - I feel like when I tried the 3d glasses 10 years or so ago it was a lot more impressive over RF on an early 80s Trinatron.  Not sure whats up with the new setup but its quite a bit of eye strain.  
 

+1 Zaxxon- the canyon running stuff is cool. Not so hot on the wide open portions.
