A few messages back, I was just lamenting the fact that I have been looking for an STE since 1990 and have only seen three in person... once. After 32 years of searching and waiting, I have one. 1MB RAM & TOS 1.62 (soon to be 4MB & 2.06). 🤓

Can I get a "Woot! Woot!"?!

So, did you wind up finding one here in the U.S., or did you adopt a U.K. model?

Also, rather than going with TOS 2.06, maybe you'd want to consider a dual-TOS board with 1.62/2.06, for the best of all worlds in terms of compatibility.

Either way, congratulations on your find!

Grats Louis! I haven't been on AA in a few months. :)

Andy! I hadn't been on AA for 2-3 years (just got burned out on everything online) until just recently. Nice to be back in touch!

Heh heh... I took your advice and adopted a UK model. I found one with a possible bad PSU and pounced, as I would have needed to replace it anyway.

Being that I needed to replace the TOS as well, I was just going to make the jump to 2.06 and leave the compatibility to the 520ST (TOS 1.04). Do you think I should still dual TOS this bad boy?

Eh... probably not. I think most issues have been taken care of over the years. If you find something that absolutely refuses to run on 2.06, you'll probably be fine with 1.04.

For that matter, with 4MB, if you run into an issue, you could probably just load any version of TOS on your STE and run it just fine.

Enjoy!

I got my STE by accident, the guy advertised it as a 520ST with internal floppy disk, so I thought it was a 520STFM,

I got a load of other stuff with it (not ST things), it came with 1MB of memory, so I thought it was upgraded, never

noticed the tiny 'E' after the ST, I had it several years before I opened it up to clean the floppy head, I then noticed the

RAM slots and the penny dropped, I had some 1MB SIMMs from old PC's, so upgraded to 4MB, guess I was just lucky :)

I know I didn't pay much for it, about £35 back in the mid 1990's

Nice!

Funny thing is that the town I grew up in is only about 30 minutes (by car) from the southern edge of the Silicon Valley area and this is only the 2nd time I have ever seen an STE in person. We had one Atari dealer in our county and it was a toy store (Teddy Bear Toys in Aptos, CA, USA). When I would go in there, he only ever had the 520STfm in stock. He would get an order of STE's in and they would be gone that same week. I never got my hands on one until now and I had to bring it over from England!

I'm green with envy when I hear the stories of the early- to mid-nineties clearance prices on Atari 8- and 16-bit gear. I wish that I'd been back into my Ataris and in a financial position to take advantage of it then. Alas, early- to mid-nineties was prime career, kid having- and kid-raising time for me and too many other things took priority. Maybe one day they'll return and I'll be ready.

Sorry to increase the "green", but I also got a second 130XE, 1050 "Happy" drive and an XC12 Cassette as a package

around the same time, again I got them for a song :)

Well, I do own a Happy 1050, and wouldn't be interest in an XE or a cassette player, so I wouldn't be envious of that batch, just the price. I'd be willing to bet you got the whole batch for less than I got just the drive for. If only I could go back in time thirty years for a month or two with a wad of cash!

Enjoy your recently acquired STE, its a great machine, very capable.

Unlike you, I´ve never saw a ST in person, only STE machines, around 30 of them.

As well, I like the short form factor of the first 520ST

Your location gives it away. For whatever reason, the whole of the ST line was much more popular in Europe than in the U.S. Don't get me wrong, they were popular here to a degree, but I get the impression that new user growth was seriously waning by the time the STE models started to come out, at least compared to the other side of the pond.
