4ever2600
7 hours ago, Ricardo Pim said: Hello friends, this is Ricardo from Game Select. I took notice of this post and came here to clarify a few things. First of all I am very sad to see discussions like these. We at Game Select continue to produce our homebrews, but with H.E.R.O. we decided to do something different. Those who follow our page know that we never hide what we did here. I don't really know exactly how to categorize this game, I would say a middle ground. I understand a hack is when you take a game's binary, reverse engineer it and change colors and sprites, without doing much more than that, but this is my personal opinion, you are free to decide yourself what it is. We had access to the original source code of Activision's H.E.R.O (you can found at internet dozens of old game source codes), in Assembly. We studied the code and we changed almost everything except the gameplay, otherwise it wouldn't be a H.E.R.O and we generated another binary game and change the name, a very common practice that I have seen in hacks and arcade ports. So the engine is the same, meaning you'll feel like you're playing the 1984 original. We've changed the entire Map, it's a whole new Mine. Forget what you memorized from H.E.R.O., we changed everything, the enemies, one of them has a prank, which due to its characteristic, sometimes the shot goes through and doesn't kill. Now there are hidden passages, some walls open holes in the ground, some stages due to different path options, you can get lost among other things. This is a job done from collector to collector, we invest time and money so that those who like to own physical copies of games can have it. About what is right or wrong, I'm not here to judge anyone, nor would I want to be judged, but you can easily find dozens of homebrew and 2600 reproductions being sold. Think! It is from a platform that manufacturers have abandoned for decades. I am happy with these works as it is what keeps our beloved 2600 still Usually called a Total Conversion. It's a deluxe hack. People here are just warning you to be careful, as Activision is still a very huge entity and own the IP for HERO and may send you a little cease and desist letter if you hit the wrong chord with someone over there.

I just think hacking an existing game and selling it, should not be something to be proud of. Maybe it's just me. I was rereading the messages and saw that you wrote it right, I got it wrong. I wanted to sincerely apologize for my rudeness.

This thread finally explained it. Is the ROM available for purchase? Not for while, but we will release for free some time in a soon future, because as a friend said before, it is just a deluxe hack.

I assumed the game was just a quick graphics hack, but from Ricardo's explanation I understand it also has a complete new mine and passages. However it's not for me; I'll stick to playing the original 🙂 Edited August 30, 2022 by Dionoid

eightbitwhit
@Ricardo Pim Is there any way to purchase this game (cartridge/boxed/whatever), and is it available in NTSC? The URL posted at the front of the Youtube videos goes to your FB page, and I don't see any way to purchase the game there.
knievel1
Let's take a poll. I loved HERO & have played it on every system it was released for. Love the SG-1000. Coleco too. I'd love to see a quality hack or sequel. How much would you pay for just the ROM? I'll say $7. Five seems low and ten a bit high, but if there were a teaser ROM of the first three levels and it was awesome, sure. Ten bucks.

The URL posted at the front of the Youtube videos goes to your FB page, and I don't see any way to purchase the game there. It seems that the only online presence maintained for GameSelect is on Facebook. You can get to their page going here: http://www.gameselect.com.br. or just straight through FB: Facebook Ricardo also has several other posts here on AtariAge with information like thesehttps://forums.atariage.com/topic/334340-space-pac-man-new-batari-basic-game/ https://forums.atariage.com/topic/335473-asteroids-attack-2019-batari-basic-game/ At first, I was also a little bit perplexed at how to order HERO 2, but it turns out that all you need to do is email Ricardo at GameSelect at atarigameselect@gmail.com I emailed him and he immediately responded with information about how to order. I ordered HERO 2 and Asteroids Attack and they arrived fully tracked and signature guaranteed within only a few days. HERO 2 is an excellent and professionally done game with fully re-imagined levels very similar to the original. I have personally played around with many different HERO clones and even tried my hand at re-coding the game and re-designing levels in windows. This is an excellently done continuation of HERO that sits on the line between remake and full sequel. I haven't played all the levels yet, but the manual says it has 20 levels (just like the original) and they are completely different and quite challenging. The game REALLY seems to start at level 9 where there are multiple paths and an 'early' appearance of the chompers. I'd say that if you enjoyed HERO, have a way to play 2600 carts, and really want to play every version there is that you should definitely add this to your collection. The price + shipping may be a bit steep for some, but I don't think it is unreasonable for what you are getting - original game, original packaging and fully working 2600 cart. If you are on the fence at all, I'd say just go through with it and email Ricardo. Even if you end up regretting your purchase, you can probably find another Atari collector in your country who didn't email Ricardo and you can sell it to them later.

doubledown
I can back up pretty much everything @wongojack has stated above, with regards to contacting Ricardo...(good/prompt communications, simple "order form" via e-mail, simple payment process), ordering & shipping process (reasonably quick - just ordered on Aug 9, received on Aug 29, shipping a bit pricey to the U.S.,but what are you gonna do, very careful/protective packaging), and good, solid, unique, and different...yet distinctively "H.E.R.O." gameplay. I am a loooong-time H.E.R.O. player, and have played most of the original variants including Sega's, and most of the homebrews including those for the Odyssey², Intellivision, 7800 and others...and I definitely like this version. I only got a chance to play a couple games last night...but I'm very happy with my purchase, and I recommend it to any other H.E.R.O. fans out there. Just remember when playing...to forget all of the caves that you have memorized...because these caves are totally different. FYI, definitely a lot cheaper to order directly from @Ricardo Pim than the recently sold copies on ebay: Edited August 30 by doubledown added info
