What is the most sensible (or amusing) thing to tuck away inside the hatch of the speech synthesizer?

Surely some folks have ideas on practical uses for the little chunk of space inside the speech synthesizer, revealed by opening its lid.

What have you kept inside your speech synthesizer, or what do you figure could take up residence there?

My suggestion: an external speaker, for playing synth audio right off the chip (for cleaner output than you get, running it to the 9919).

Why'd it have a lid in the first place?

Originally the plan was to release cartridges that would extend the built-in speech vocabulary. There are a few out there that actually have the cartridge port (and from pictures of one of them we reversed the pinout), but I don't think any actual cartridges ever turned up.

Growing up, I thought that it was an ash tray thingy.
