Thanks for letting me pick a game for this season's HSC. Beamrider is one of my favourite 2600 games, and I think deserves to be better known than it is. I actually played the C64 version of this first, as I had it on a compliation called Softaid (a charity compilation released to raise money for victims of the Ethiopean famine) when I was a kid. I really liked it then, and was surprised later to learn firstly that there was a 2600 version, and secondly how good it was. It's just a very good blaster with a few more nuances than some similar games. It starts pedestrian but soon ramps up to a fun and frantic pace!

Dodgem is a bit of a sentimental favourite of mine, as (along with Combat and Space Invaders) it forms part of a trio that made up my first ever video games. I got my Atari for Christmas 1981 (I think, although it might have been '82), and my parents had bought it used (not that I cared, I was just delighted to have one!). Like everyone then, I really wanted the Atari for Space Invaders, and got that for Christmas as well (I don't know if that came with the Atari or my parents bought it separately), and Combat was the pack in game. The original owners had obviously bought Dodgem at some point as well, so they were the three games I had when I first got the Atari. I really liked it, and played it a lot as something that worked for a quick game when I wanted to play but didn't have much time. I thought that dynamic made it a good choice as a bonus game.

Anyway, that's more than enough from me, here are some scores*:

*The Dodgem score is the max 1,080. You can tell the score has rolled over as there is no zero at the front as there would be if I just scored 80. Hopefully this is enough for the score to count

Wonderful game pick with Beamrider, @Jasonhrb! Beamrider is one of those games that's just a ton of fun and exactly the sort of frantic fast paced twitchy shooter I love... unfortunately for me it's also a game I'm not too good at so this might be a "one and done" round for me

I know it's definitely going to be a one and done round for the bonus game Dodge 'Em, because I had never managed to break 200 points in it before and after banging my head against the wall with it for half an hour to finally get to 200 points I can safely say that I never, ever want to play this godforsaken game again :lolblue:

There is a pattern for Dodge em, I cant remember it though. I learned about it when playing it for this very same high score club back in 2006 I believe...

Anyways, if you figure it out its easy to max the score...but what was it??? No idea, Im barely cracking a few hundred now haha

I don't know about the single car mazes, but I have found a pattern for the two car mazes that seems to work. I've tried to set out the steps below.  :

1) Clear the dots in the first quarter maze of dots on the outer lane

2) Go to the next lane in and clear dots from three of the four quarters

3) Go to the next lane in and clear dots from all four quarters

4) Go to the innermost land and clear dots from all four quarters

5) Use the slow speed as needed to line up the enemy cars so they are both in the 2nd lane from the inside and will go to the inside lane at the next opportunity, then go out two lanes at the point where you go straight to the quarter of dots that are not cleared.

6) When that quarter of dots is cleared,go back to the outside lane and clear the remaining dots

With the exception of step five, the whole thing is done in high speed. For step 5, you have to use the two speeds to line up the enemy cars at the right point so that you can do the double lane transfer at the right point to go to the uncleared quarter of dots. This is the one part of the process that is a bit tricky.

I haven't found a pattern that works in the same way for single car mazes, and have to take each one of those individually.

Stick with Beamrider @Skippy B. Coyote . It's an absolute belter of a game imho, and one that becomes more instinctive as you play it. The key is remembering what you need to shoot, and what you just need to avoid. The "avoid" stuff is all green or brown which makes it easier. And for high scores, you need to try and rack up lives in the early rounds, and get good at hitting the motherships. If you have enough lives, the mothership can be worth much more than the rest of the level combined. The trick is to get as many of the green things homing in on you as you can close to where you wan to take your shot. When one is just about to get you, switch a lane and blast the mothership. If need be, unload more than one torpedo to clear any remaining green obstacles in yoru way.

If last season is anything to go by, we're pretty evenly matched skills wise, so I suspect you have a much bigger score in you for Beamrider than you have got so far
