Pengo is one of my favorite games on the Atari computer that has been really well ported to the 2600. An under-appreciated game that gets overlooked and somewhat forgotten. Some tips: • Focus on lining up the jewel blocks especially in the middle of the playfield for maximum points. Do a quick scan of the location of the jewel blocks at start of level to determine the optimal line up location. Use other blocks to help align them and take out Sno-Bees in your way. • Destroy flashing ice blocks which contain unhatched Sno-Bees for 500 pts when possible • Use the walls to stun Sno-Bees when trapped near walls by hitting the wall when a Sno-Bee is near it and quickly take it out • You can turn off/on the Pengo theme music using the left Difficulty switch (B is on). @Vocelli let us know if this is ok. 2 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Growing up my absolute favorite video game was Venture on the ColecoVision and I played the everliving heck out of it. I like the Atari 2600 port of Venture a whole lot too, but it always paled in comparison to the ColecoVision version... that is until @Omegamatrix came along and made an utterly astounding hack of Venture for the Atari 2600 that's every bit as good as the ColecoVision version! It's very much a case of "words fail me" in a good way . . . . given he hardware we're talking about, the game is absolutely stunning. Venture was actually one of the very first games I played on HSC and I really liked it. But this just takes it to another level. Pengo is also fab. It's one of those games that looks a bit dull until you get into the nuances of it, at which point it becomes really engaging. Like my pick of Beamrider, it's one of those games that perhaps deserves to be better known than it is, but probably suffered on that score because of when it came out. In some ways, Crazy balloon is a bit overshadowed by the other two, which is a shame. It's frustrating at first, but becomes fun once you get the hang of it. a really good "quick play" type game. I'll be playing as much of these as time allows over the next couple of weeks, but that's quite enough of me wittering on. I had never played it before this week but it reminds me a ton of a couple Japanese import games I used to play on the Game Boy Advance way back when, Kuru Kuru Kururin and the sequel Kururin Paradise. They were a bit more graphically involved but a very similar concept gameplay wise, learning the rhythm of a moving object to navigate it through a maze without touching the sides.
