It's looking increasingly likely it will have to be just one colour anyway, as on scanlines where enemies are being repositioned I have no cycles available to update the BG colour, so when they move vertically the location of the bands change. It does look quite nice with the shading in my oppinion, but if you're going to do it for the FG, stay with the same X? value instead. using the same hue will make it so much better.
