Joint project an Atari 2600 game and disassembly resources.

Recommended Posts

I wonder if anyone is interested in doing a joint project, I am a newbie and would like help with writing my first game, I have found the resource https://github.com/realdmx/retrore helpful as it disassembles and comments some popular games. I wonder if anyone else has any further resources. Or would like to collaborate on a game maybe with other newbies who would like to learn 6502 assembly together or a seasoned programmer who can help by mentoring our first steps ,I am open to ideas about what type of game we could make, but was thinking about a 2d endless runner type of game, let me know what you think.

Good luck with the project!  I don't have any real experience with programming but decided to jump into retro gaming a few months ago as well.   I think the disassemblies are a great resource when fully commented and decided to dip my toes into the homebrew pool with a hack of one as well (in my case it was my Limbo hack of Pitfal!).   I wasn't aware of this particular archive of more disassemblies and some there are new to me so thanks for that.

If you have some basic programming experience (pun intended), I'd recommend looking into batari Basic (bB for short) here on the forums as it seems to be a very popular (for good reason) entry point into coding games yourself.  I'm not at that point yet myself as I'd like to work on another hack first so I can't comment first hand about using it though.  For runner style games, I'd recommend this one:

@VHZC 's games are some of the most enjoyable that I've found since discovering the 2600 homebrew community and his Ninja/Knight/Bear games are great platformers as well.  I believe he said he uses bB for all his games in case that interests you.  Regardless, good luck!

I wrote the Collect tutorial, a 14 part series on writing a complete 2K game from scratch. In it I link to Easy 6502, an online interactive tutorial for 6502 assembly.

There's also this pinned topic in the Atari 2600 Programming forum that contains links to numerous resources to get you going.
