Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration

I got this for my Xbox Series X and Xbox One X.  What a great job by Digital Eclipse!  It's more than just a games compilation.  While I love it, the game selection could've been better.  I guess licensing and possible compatibility with the emulator kept some of the games out of the collection.

But vector games look like vector games!  I'm playing on my Samsung C9 and the games are just gorgeous.

Been seeing some 3D printed paddle adapters for analog sticks.

There have been some mini wheel adapters similar to these before, but these appear to have all been designed by the folks at Digital Eclipse and look much better.

Hey, Digital Eclipse folks -- if you're out there, consider selling the Switch version!

Mike Mika -- I remember emailing him in college about his Yar's Revenge port on the Game Boy.

This is by far the best retro collection ever made imho. This is how you do a retrospective. A+ all around despite some obvious omissions as far as games go… telling the story of Atari is incomplete without 2600 space invaders, pac-man, e.t., and raiders, but this is still the best retro compilation there is.

Day one preorder for me and my physical Switch edition arrived a couple of days ago.

Incase anyone is wondering, Neo Breakout consists of 51 levels and then loops back to level 2. I enjoyed this game, the other 'reimaginings' seem fun, a step back from the 'recharged' series but fans of the originals will like these as they are literally licks of paint for the most part. Quadratank though, I can't figure how to even move the tank straight 😕

Got through all the videos etc, top quality content and there is so much to go back and look at / read at my leisure.

Nice to get a few more Arcade and 7800 games, Lynx is a bit under represented though.

THE COMPLETE SWORDSQUEST COMICS ARE HERE! I have never seen these so will make some time for them. Its refreshing to see complete comics rather than just the front cover like Sega like doing. Talking of Swordsquest, Airworld seems very faithful to the other games as its a character running from one empty room to another and I have no idea what I am doing 🤣🤣🤣

The Jaguar games, I had never played any of these titles and apart from two of them which I have not spent much time with I think they are great, whoever knew Atari Karts would be such fun! Cybermorph once you get used to the controls is a solid early polygonal shooter. Tempest 2000 is great but I now understand why people said "Tempest 4000 is basically Tempest 2000" - it basically is. I am a little puzzled why no Breakout 2000? Missle Command 3D is cool.

Anyway, thats my random thoughts.

Hold both sticks forward to move forward. They're tank controls just like seen in arcade Battlezone and the 1970's black & white Tank line of arcade games from Atari/Kee Games.

Just like in many real-life tracked military vehicle such as tanks since at least the start of WWII (I don't know anything about the controls of earlier examples of military tanks from WWI and the interwar period), the driver has twin sticks.

Pushing both sticks forward is how the tank is driven straight ahead. Backwards on both sticks is how you reverse. Forward on the right stick and back on the left stick rotates the tank counter-clockwise in an otherwise stationary position (And the reverse of those positions rotates it clockwise).

A turn while moving forward is done by idling one of the two sticks by releasing one of the analog sticks to its neutral position while continuing to hold the other stick forward. For instance releasing the left stick while continuing to hold the right stick forward will make you turn left (while you flip sides in order to turn right).

You can also turn while moving in reverse. Hold a stick backwards (pushing it towards your body) while having the other stick released in neutral. Same concept as what I explained above.

If you're at all familiar with arcade Battlezone, it's all the same deal here. The overhead 2D perspective is just throwing you off.

Oh I worked out going forward but turning.. sorry but this is the most cumbersome control set up I have ever known. Maybe its me but under no circumstance can I drive in any direction that I want to go. I think this game has an unlockable too but looks like ill be skipping that one..

Different tastes for different folks. I think tank controls such as in Battlezone work beautifully.

Like I said though, hopefully they consider patching in the option to play this with Combat style single stick controls so that everyone is catered to. And it would also be nice since you could then use an arcade stick or the various d-pad only gamepads out there on modern systems to play Quadratank with (Not to mention the classic joystick that the VCS has). Would be easy enough to patch in.

You're not missing much by not being able to unlock the game hidden behind here. The unlockable is the unfinished Combat Two prototype for the 2600 which featured some interesting ideas, but wasn't finished enough to be more than a historical curiosity.

I like this idea.

Talking of unlockables, do we know what they all are yet and how we unlock them? Aside from Combat 2 there is another one were the clue is something about 'sector 3' and 'golden fields' - ive not worked that one out yet. I think I have all the others.

The tank controls are very confusing but can make the thing fun with other players going through the same 'ordeal'. Against an AI that doesn't have to think about it, not so much but it's not very smart fortunately.

I only unlocked Basic Math for now and I guess 2600's Breakout is unlocked by playing Neo Breakout (something about beating a special level), but I'm not very good unfortunately.

I have done a comparison on the titles on both the Atari Flashback Classics collection (Atari Flashback Classics on Nintendo Switch, Atari Flashback Classics Volumes 1 and 2 on Playstation, the old Atari Vault 1 and 2 on PC/VCS) and here are the results. I didn't check everything with a list I had done previously, but your arcade category here stood out as definitely incomplete. 14 arcade games didn't get carried forward. You left off Soccer, Pool Shark, Red Baron, and Sky Diver.

  • Atari Baseball
  • Atari Basketball
  • Atari Football
  • Atari Soccer
  • Avalanche
  • Canyon Bomber
  • Destroyer
  • Dominos
  • Monte Carlo
  • Pool Shark
  • Red Baron
  • Sky Diver
  • Sprint 2

I’m actually enjoying the “Reimagined” games quite a bit, especially VCTR SCTR and whatever the Haunted House game is called. I also quite enjoy the trippy version of YARS’ with the funky music - it would be even more fun after a couple beers or whatever. I wonder: does anyone know if the new version incudes the HSWWSH easter egg? I hit the Qotile several times but couldn’t trigger an easter egg but that might be because it’s not there.

Shoot, you are right. Dunno how I missed that as I remember telling myself that Red Baron was missing.

Completely agree with this! BTW, Do you happen to know what you actually have to do to unlock Combat 2? The clue isn't much help..

Yes, 2600 Breakout is unlocked after completing level 10 of Neo Breakout if I recall.

Basic Math unlocked by finding the secret room in Haunted Houses 1st Level.

(Something) was unlocked when you 100% all the history sections and watch the videos etc but sadly I can't remember what it actually unlocked!

There hasn't been a playable home version of S.T.U.N. Runner since the Lynx.  That's just plain wrong.

Arcade version of STUN Runner and Badlands were officially re-released on Midway Arcade Treasures 3, a compilation for PS2, OG Xbox and Gamecube. Its very cheap to buy if you have any of those systems.  I don't think the emulation for STUN Runner and some of the others is 100% perfect on that compilation, but its good enough to play.

I don't know if you saw my other post but you can change the controls in Quadratank (upper face button).

Yeah, I have it.  It is unplayable, at least on PS2.  Can't remember what the issue was, specifically.  I believe it ran at like 300% speed or something like that.

So I just did this, then finished the game. But since you can only finish the game holding one item or type of item at a time, I had to put down the little piece of paper from the secret room to collect all the pieces of the urn. After that, I *thought* Basic Math would be unlocked, but it's not.

What did I do wrong?
