HSC19 R16: GHOST CHASER

Recommended Posts

Seasonal Spooktacular time! Part 1!

Ghost Chaser

Nice game, doesn't take too much beating - codes to warp to 2nd part given in game, top players probably can play through from the start - as you wish.

Ghost Chaser

BONUS GAMES

Gremlins

Not a great game but will do for a quick romp here - was it unfinished / a proto anyhow let's give it a play. [See comments on post below]

Gremlins

Monster Smash

Ok for a go or two before your arm falls off!

Ghost Chaser is a bit woolly needs a stick. Fun though, had a bunch of goes but stuck on the green screen with the hole in the bottom which I guess I should jump in but seemed to die.... score around 6900 not using the code words. Probably scoring for playing plus scoring for completing each part.

Ideas for the 2nd part poll welcome so far I have

Phantom

Nighmares

and

Necromancer

on the short list ;)

Is Forbidden Forest playable, or scary in other aspects than strictly Halloweeny?

Yes I think we played it before once should fit the bill

Completed Ghost Chaser (no passwords) was fun playing again 6,850

Monster Mash 1,309 level 2 only using L/R to mash button makes it a bit easy!

Gremlins yes at first awkward, then you get into it, then you realise it's way too easy and can go on forever. I sort of made myself out at Night 26 score 90,664. Shame as has a lot of good elements. You can kill the creatures through the barricades (I didn't do this).

Will start the next poll soon!

Ghost Chaser - 5450 pts, found 6 out of 8 keys (might need to look up a video on YouTube how to find the last two)

Gremlins - 8840 pts (starting on default night 3 and reaching night 9)

Monster Smash! - 410 pts (wave 3)

I spent by far the most time on Ghost Chaser. The other two are fun bonus games, Monster Smash in particular seems refreshing though the controls were not super intuitive to begin with.

Edit: Ok, so I watched a walk through of Ghost Chaser. The link to the second stage was far from obvious, to say the least. Also while the first half is varied and fun, the second half looks dull and very repetitive until you reach the final screen where you have to do nothing, you just win the game? I had expected a super boss at the end. It is almost like they had half the game finished, then ran out of time or memory and had to quickly wrap it up.

Thanks for giving me ideas for something to test out my XEGS machine with. This thing is pretty fun!

Woah! what a great setup you have there, nice picture

Ghost Chaser is worth figuring out without a walk through if you can, it's not too tricky and lots of lives.

The poll is tight, I'm rooting for Necromancer but The Busters are leading the way - please vote EVERYONE !!!

The 2600 version of Gremlins is fun as it's the same ideas but more challenging? Hope someone can re-do our version to improve it one day :)

My scores:

Ghost Chaser: 7550

Gremlins: 54496

Monster Smash: 714

I actually recorded a higher score on Ghost Chaser (7750) but didn't finish the game on that go so didn't take a pic.  I was essentially one screen away though, I remember that.

Gremlins was one I always enjoyed as a teen, although at the time I didn't know it was only a prototype.

EDIT:  Forgot to add that Monster Smash was tough but a fun idea!

Happy Hallowe'en everyone!!! 👻

I think I know what you're talking about but if you're paying attention...

Spoiler

When you fist use that screen you have to use the bar at the top to grab the key, right?  And the eyes of the painting watch you which I always thought was fun.  But that's what drew my eyes back to the painting when I re-entered that screen so I didn't find it hard at all.  At least I'm assuming that's what you mean, and if not, I just really enjoyed that painting room with the rotating book shelf anyway :)

This game was also definitely a fave of mine at the time because there weren't many games you could beat.

Gremlins isn't exactly a prototype - it was completed and produced for the Atari 5200 but sat in a warehouse on pallets for several years due to the Tramiel takeover. If I remember right, someone at Atari found it and finally sent it to stores in '85 or '86 - which was strange, because the 5200 was long dead at that point. But it *was* an official release for that system. This is someone's translation to the 8-bit, and it's identical except for the controls. By the way, you can push either "shift" key to use your flashbulbs, which stun all enemies on the screen for a few seconds. Fun and impressive game, but around night 30 the difficulty stops increasing, so I just called it quits with several lives remaining.

I seem to remember spending a week or two with Ghost Chaser several years back and beating it then, but I have no idea how to do it now...

I play the Joy2B+ version where I have this function on the second button.

My results so far (did not have much time to play as we have been on vacation)

Ghost Chaser: 4,850

Gremlins: 7,944

Monster Smash: 3,015

Monster Mash is fun for a round or two!

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I just wonder if it could have been made a bit more difficult, it needs to be more challenging like Berzerk or Robotron to make it fun.  I figured there were some bombs but didn't try the shift key, didn't need them as it happens!

'Chaser not a lot to figure out, and quite a small game in the scheme of things - use the password if you get stuck.

Monster Smash is a goodie and a great bonus game. Improved to 6,974 level 4 - mushed one person, another made it through unscathed, see screenshot icons.

Last call for anyone still to vote for part II of the seasonal spooktacular?

Agreed - would have been nice! I'm guessing the programmer was running out of cycles for tougher difficulty adjustments, more aggressive AI, etc., judging from how slowly the game starts to run in the later levels. It actually makes things a bit *easier* as the enemy count increases. At least on NTSC...

I only know a little bit about programming for the 8-bit computer line, but it looks like everything must be bitmaps, instead of using the hardware sprites? Since there are so many non-flickering multi-colored characters on a single scanline?
