Megalomaniac
When the STe launched, Atari said 5% of existing programs didn't work on itN. ST Format issue 8 listed 30 which had problems, but that some of those had already been fixed. Does anyone have a definitive list of which games might fail on an STe? Even if a fixed version is out there, its worth knowing that editions released before the STe, and bought by owners of ordinary STs, will still be the incompatible version. The STF list, as a starter: Arctic Fox Barbarian (Palace) Barbarian 2 (Palace) Captain Blood Colossus Chess X Defender of the Crown F-16 Combat Pilot Future Wars Ghouls 'n' Ghosts (mentioned as already fixed) Gunship Kick Off (I remember my mate Antonio moaning about having to return this) License to Kill MicroProse Soccer Mr. Heli New Zealand Story (mentioned as already fixed) Netherworld Operation Wolf (first ST game I played, thought it was the bee's knees - was I ever that young?) Paperboy Populous Rick Dangerous Speedball Starglider Star Wars STOS (fixed quickly) Strider (mentioned as already fixed) Stunt Car Racer Warerloo Weird Dreams Winter Games 1st Word is also mentioned, and I know TV Sports Football didn't work wither (I don't think that was fixed until the budget reissue? Sports fans got an especially raw deal with incompatible games initially, especially if you count Speedball as sport) Edited October 30, 2022 by Megalomaniac
Mr.JT
When you say fixed do you mean community patched or officially? Only ask as I spent a long time playing populous out of the box from the store on my 1040STE at the time - never had a problem? Wonder if this list was validated - maybe created ahead of time? Megalomaniac
I took it to mean officially 'fixed' by the publishers. Assuming it wasn't the budget reissue of Populous that you had, and that it being 1Mb rather than 512k made no difference (unlikely), I'd imagine they had compatible versions of that out there very quickly, as it was the kind of thing people bought a 16-bit to play. Lynxpro
I don't remember game patches being made available through BBSes or in user group libraries but that would've been great resources back then. I'm not saying it didn't happen; I just don't remember any examples... I know the incompatibility issue scared me away from upgrading to the STe. Hell, I didn't even upgrade TOS versions because of that issue.
