Hatari Joystick setup

Hi,

NOOB question:

I recently built an arcade cabinet and am trying to get Hatari setup and working with it.  I downloaded Hatari and am using the latest emutos image.  I can get my games to load, but.....when I go to joystick setup it does not detect anything.  I am using an ipac 4 and have it connected to my laptop via USB.  I can use my keyboard, but....no idea how to get my joystick and button to work.  How do I get it to detect it?  Also, is there a way to configure controls for a specific game?

I've read a lot of things on the web, but can't figure out why it isn't working.  FYI - it does not detect my joystick when launching Hatari directly.  So, it's not an issue with a specific game.

Thank your your help!

Corey

I pass "-j 1" when starting the emulator,   I'm not sure if that option is still needed.   I think there is an option to map the joystick in the settings (F12)

EDIT:  I think I'm mistaken, the -j 1 option is the option I pass when there is no joystick connected-  it creates an emulated joystick via keyboard.   There is a "--joy1 real" option that tells it to use a real joystick for that port

Not sure why I keep getting message that content needs to be approved by moderator....but....

I got it figured out for anyone searching in the future.  Choose "keyboard" instead of joystick and you can simply move your joystick up, down, etc....and it will pick up the input. Only other thing I need to figure out is how to map the rest of controls to the actual keyboard so I can type.  Right now the other arcade controls are mapped to the keys.  So, it makes typing in your name for high score....challenging.

Peace!

You mentioned using an ipac 4 so I'm assuming you're using MAME controllers rather than PC gamepads?

Sounds like you got Hatari to use the cursor & Control keys to emulate the joystick so that's a start.

Most ST games can use the Space Bar to either pause or as a special function, if the later is the case then 'P' is used to pause instead.  I believe those are mapped to MAME controlers already.

If you plan on playing ST or any computer games than you should get a keyboard to plug in...

Hey @MrMaddog - I am using arcade joysticks/buttons.  I'm not sure if that means MAME or not......I thought MAME was just an emulator.  But, I'm so new to all this.  But, I am using MAME, yes.

I was able to get my joystick and fire button to work, but.....if I want to type in my name (high score).....the buttons on my control panel (arcade) will control many of the keys.  This means that they do not work on my actual keyboard.  Very odd.  I have so many questions on all of this.  I am launching hatari from Launchbox, so maybe that is why?  I will try launching just Hatari...and see if I get the same.

Ideally, I would like to use my trackball, joystick, and....use my fire 1 and 2 buttons for left and right mouse clicks.  But, just not sure if that is even possible.

FYI - I do have a keyboard I am using.

@Ax1lla

It sounds to me like your controller isn't in Xinput ot Dinput mode, so the emulator / OS is just detecting it as a keyboard.  Is it working well in other emulators?  I should get back to setting up launchbox on the TV I upgraded specifically for it... and the Sinden Light gun...
