I think this weeks games serve as a reminder of how good the programmers who made great games on the 2600 (several of which we've played this season) actually were. I don't think U.S games ever made it over to  the UK in the 2600s commercial life, and the fact that they and many others didn't (we only really got Activision, Imagic, Parker Brothers and CBS* over here) is frankly probably why we never had anything like the crash that hit the U.S here in Britain. The lack of poor quality third parties meant that the quality of 2600 games over here was generally always as good as the system allowed. The 2600 instead faded out of the "front line" scene over a couple of years as 8 bit computers took over (alhough it had a surprisingly successful second life as a budget system over here later on).

None of these are great imho, but Name this Game is for me by a distance the best of the bunch. It's playable enough, and the game has a decent level of challenge. In feel it amost reminds me of the early Mastertronic offerings on the C64 that started popping up a year or two later, the difference being that those retailed at £1.99 a time!. It's not a patch on what Imagic or Imagine were producing (as the last round showed!) , but it's a half decent functioning game.

The other two on the other hand will both be strong contentders for worst game of the season (indeed, as it stands, they are definitely the top 2 in that category for me). They are both just sloppily done imho. Entombed is a type of game that I often really enjoy, but this is just so poortly done. In particular, the lack of ability to move diagonally really kills the flow of the game, and just makes it no fun at all. Likewise, M.A.D is some kind of poor quality cross between Missile command and Atlantis. But again, control issues kill the fun. The way you can only move in a few set positions makes it really frustrating.

The basic graphics, sound  and general presentation means that neither of these were ever going to be classics, but they could have both been decent with just a bit more care taken. However, the lack of that care  leaves us with two rubbish games, and me with a greater appreciation of how poor quaility 3rd party games did so much to cause the crash on the other side of the pond!.

*CBS also sold Coleco titles for the 2600 in the UK

The T.L.D.R version of the above is : Two of these three games are rubbish (with Name this Game being uninspiring but O.K) ,games like this did probably did much to cause the crash (and the fact that they weren't sold in the U.K is why we didn't really have a crash over here), and I'm glad that U.S games never tried to sell these in  the U.K!

Anyway, that's enough of me moaning about this weeks games, here are some scores

Hey now, Mastertronic wasn't that bad! I loved Master Of Magic, and really enjoyed some of their simple, stupid games like Action Biker too.

Otherwise I pretty much agree with everything you said. Name This Game shines compared to the other two, and is still only okay. I feel like I could really enjoy Entombed if it weren't so easy to get stuck on the walls! It's really frustrating to have 20+ make-breaks and still die because I just can't move. BTW, at first I totally thought those moving walls were just that (moving walls to be avoided) until I got trapped by one and realized I was supposed to collect them!

Its been awhile but I couldn't pass up on posting a score for entombed.

Entombed 1BB : 60

60.thumb.jpg.3663d87c8a4a36977b771197cb4100a9.jpg

I owned this one back in the day, just before the great Atari crash.

I got my copy and a couple of others ( tanks but no tanks was one ) for $1.00 each at a Sporting goods store here in Australia.

We used to go there to get all the Cricket and Soccer equipment my brother and I used to play, and then one day there was this large DUMP BIN Display of Atari 2600 games.

Needless to say it was an Awesome surprise! The only thing is that they all played in Black and White, knowing what I know now about PAL and NTSC it was pretty clear they bought a whole stack of NTSC games cheap to sell here in OZ to make some  $$$.

Ahh the memories 🤗

One last thing on Entombed, there is actually a VERY interesting back story to the programming, in particular how the MAZE gets generated...

I rarely go out of town... but when I do it is for Thanksgiving.

There will not be any updates until SUNDAY or MONDAY. So, if you can.... hold off on posting until the weekend.

Traveling to Greensburg PA to see my 83 year old parents.

Visiting a little shop called the Warp Zone (retro games shop)... hopefully still open.

Enjoy the week

My friend Ryan (from Greensburg, PA) says the store is still open, but just on weekends. They 'SHOULD' be open this Friday, but due to Thanksgiving the hours could differ..... 🍺👍
